The Faculty of Pharmacy invites suitable candidates to join their Pharmaceutical Chemistry team.
The Department
Formal courses leading to a degree in Pharmacy at Rhodes University began in 1956, evolving into the Department of Pharmacy within the Faculty of Science, then the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and finally establishing as the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1980. It is currently the only Faculty of Pharmacy in South Africa. The university's long-standing association with pharmacy dates back to 1929, when Rhodes was recognized for pharmacy training.
The faculty moved to its current premises in 1988, equipped with state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities.
The pharmacy profession has evolved to emphasize patient-centered care with a strong scientific foundation, covering the minimum curriculum required by the South African Pharmacy Council, including internships and professional evaluations.
Internships can be completed in community, hospital, industrial, or academic settings, requiring a minimum of 12 months at an accredited site, submission of CPD evidence, and passing pre-registration exams. Successful interns register as CSPs and work in public or other sectors, with opportunities for postgraduate specialization in clinical, industrial, or academic pharmacy.
Main Objectives
All academics are responsible for teaching, research, community engagement, and contributing to their departments and the wider profession. They are also expected to undertake administrative and leadership roles at various levels.
The Requirements
Associate ProfessorPhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry or related field, with 10-12 years of teaching or professional experience, registration with SAPC, and active membership in professional organizations. Experience in teaching, research supervision, securing research funding, and leadership roles is required.
Senior LecturerMaster’s Degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry or related field, significant progress toward PhD, at least 7 years of teaching or professional experience, registration with SAPC, and relevant teaching and research experience. Evidence of research supervision and funding success is advantageous.

Remuneration
Grade AP: R936,120 basic, approximately R1,203,447 total. Grade SL: R783,243 basic, approximately R1,013,469 total.
The position is advertised as permanent; however, a fixed-term contract may be offered. The university reserves the right not to fill the position.
