Aon Re Africa is hiring a Technical Claims Advocate, this is a hybrid role with the flexibility to work both virtually and from our head office in Sandton.
The role of Technical Claims Advocate is to provide efficient, accurate and professional administration of reinsurance claims for the brokerage, servicing both national and international reinsurance clients. Being responsible for end‑to‑end claims administration, including reserves, supervising idle claims, proactive recoveries from reinsurers, and clear communication with stakeholders.
The Technical Claims Advocate will aid the technical accounts function as vital and will ensure every claim movement is properly recorded and reconciled, which contributes to accurate financial reporting and reliable client service.

Register, process and maintain all reinsurance claims on the relevant systems in an accurate and timely manner.
Verify completeness and correctness of claims documentation and liaise with brokers, clients and reinsurers for any outstanding information.
Prepare and submit claim advice, bordereaux and supporting documentation to reinsurers and/or intermediaries in line with contractual terms and timelines.
Manage the full claims' lifecycle from first notification to final settlement, ensuring all milestones and decisions are documented.
Maintain up‑to‑date electronic and/or physical claim files in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
Update and maintain claim reserves in line with the agreed cover note, treaty wording and internal guidelines.
Regularly review reserve adequacy and follow up with brokers, underwriters and reinsurers on any required reserve movements or confirmations.
Ensure that all reserve changes are promptly captured in the system and communicated to the technical accounts/finance team for accurate financial reporting.
Monitor and identify idle or inactive claims (no movement or action over a defined period).
Proactively follow up with relevant stakeholders (brokers, clients, reinsurers, adjusters) to progress, resolve or close such claims.
Escalate long‑outstanding or dormant matters where vital and ensure that claim statuses and records are updated accordingly.
Proactively follow up on outstanding claim recoveries and collections from reinsurers, locally and internationally.
Track and reconcile claim payments received against expected recoveries, escalating delays or discrepancies where appropriate.
Build and maintain professional working relationships with reinsurers, clients, brokers and other market counterparts.
Respond promptly and professionally to queries from reinsurance clients, reinsurers and internal stakeholders.
Assist the technical accounts team with claim‑related entries, reconciliations and allocations.
Ensure that all claim movements (paid, outstanding, reserves, recoveries) are accurately reflected in the technical accounts.
Support month‑end and year‑end processes by providing claim reports, reconciliations and backing documentation as needed.
Work closely with technical accounts/finance to resolve any mismatches or outstanding items relating to claims and recoveries.
Allocate and apportion claims correctly between different treaties, layers, lines of business and facultative placements (claims sessioning).
Correctly apply deductibles, limits, co‑insurance, aggregates and retentions in claims calculations.
Handle claims across multiple lines of business, ideally including:
Bonds / guarantees (e.g. performance, advance payment, bid bonds)
Engineering lines (e.g. CAR, EAR, machinery breakdown) – facultative and treaty
Support the preparation and interpretation of treaty claim bordereaux and summaries, ensuring claims are matched to the correct treaty, line of business and underwriting year.
Prepare regular and ad hoc claim, reserve and recovery reports for management, brokers and clients.
Monitor and highlight trends, delays and potential problem areas in claims, reserves, recoveries and idle files.
Ensure that all activities comply with internal policies, reinsurance contracts, regulatory requirements and data protection standards.
Contribute to the ongoing improvement of claims processes, controls, service levels and system usage.
Work closely with brokers, technical accounts, operations and other internal teams to ensure a seamless client experience.
Assist with audits, internal reviews and client or reinsurer meetings as required.
Support the implementation of new clients, treaties, systems or processes from a claims' perspective.
Capture claims on the in-house system and actively monitor the claims' diary, client claim register and claim files.
Notify Reinsurers of claims and calculate reinstatement premiums where applicable.
Liaise with Brokers regarding cash calls and/or similar matters raised by clients.
Recover claims from Reinsurers and settle clients’ claims timeously.
Supervise incoming receipts and payments from clients and Reinsurers.
Liaise with the finance team on debtors' age analysis and recon items in order to clear outstanding matters.
Adjust reinstatement premiums when actual premiums for covered period are received from clients.
Prepare and distribute claims statistics to clients on a monthly basis in an agreed format.
Identify and report potential problems in advance and proactively assist Brokers, clients and Reinsurers to resolve claims queries efficiently and professionally.
Participate in special projects and ad hoc additional work requirements.
Take ownership and accountability for cash call collections.
Responsible for engaging in business development and/or contributing directly or indirectly to all business development efforts in Aon South Africa.
