Job summary

A recruitment agency is seeking a Service Manager for Diesel Generators in Port Elizabeth. Job description

Position: Service Manager – Diesel Generators

Location: Port Elizabeth

Requirements:

  • Grade 12
  • A relevant trade qualification (Qualified Diesel Mechanic, Millwright, or similar) is an advantage.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in the diesel generator industry, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Expert technical knowledge of large industrial diesel generators, with experience across a range of engine makes including, but not limited to, Volvo, Scania, and Perkins.
  • Strong and proficient electrical knowledge is essential, including the ability to read schematics and troubleshoot complex faults on alternators and Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS).
  • In-depth knowledge of major generator controllers (e.g., Deep Sea Electronics, ComAp) and their configuration software is required.
  • Proven leadership ability with experience managing and developing a technical team.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be willing to travel to client sites.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, and mentor a team of service technicians, scheduling work and overseeing performance.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the team, acting as the senior point of escalation for complex mechanical, electrical, and controller-related diagnostics.
  • Oversee the day-to-day workflow of the factory workshop, ensuring maintenance and repairs are completed efficiently, on time, and within budget.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for client assets.
  • Manage the preparation of quotations for repairs, maintenance contracts, and new service work.
  • Ensure quality control by inspecting work performed by technicians and signing off on major jobs.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for key clients, building and maintaining strong professional relationships.
  • Proactively visit client sites to assess their needs, ensure satisfaction with completed work, and identify new business opportunities.
  • Drive the growth of the service department by securing new service level agreements (SLAs) and contracts
  • Maintain an expert level of product knowledge on large-scale diesel generators across various engine makes, including but not limited to Volvo, Scania, and Perkins.
  • Ensure all service operations comply with company policies and occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Oversee the standby and call-out roster, acting as the primary management contact for after-hours emergencies.
