SGS South Africa, Matrolab Division, is seeking to fill a key role in its Civil Engineering Site Laboratories. The role includes assisting the Supervisor/Laboratory Manager with various tasks on site and in the laboratory, including cleaning equipment and preparing materials for testing such as soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregate. The Senior Materials Tester will ensure the laboratory remains clean and will follow all instructions from technicians, supervisors, or authorized personnel.

The ideal candidate will possess integrity, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to command respect. They should have the energy and passion to maintain good staff relationships and a successful track record in delivering performance against strategic objectives, ensuring quality and testing methods are followed, and deviations are reported promptly.

Job Responsibilities
  • Supervise and/or carry out testing in accordance with prescribed methods, ensuring competence in all tests performed.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the site or workshop after tasks are completed, ensuring it is free of consumables and debris.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • Report deviations, irregularities, and non-conformances orally.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the site supervisor, laboratory manager, or regional manager.
  • Conduct field and laboratory work, including sampling, calculations, and testing according to methods.
  • Complete timesheets accurately daily.
  • Maintain discipline within the department.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 / NQF4 or equivalent, with relevant experience or recognition through Prior Learning.
  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Computer literacy in Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Competent with SANS and THM 1 test methods.
Additional Information
  • Experience in sampling and preparation is advantageous.
  • Experience in administration and fieldwork (densities, sampling, concrete cube handling, DCP, Ring and Ball tests, Sand Patch, Viscosity tests, asphalt and bitumen sampling) is beneficial.
  • Qualified to perform tests across all laboratory divisions including soils, asphalt, seals, concrete, and aggregate.
  • Capable of performing related calculations.
  • Ability to manage laboratory activities such as quality control under supervision.
  • Physically capable of handling samples as required.
