A leading university in South Africa is inviting applications for the role of Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Media Studies. The ideal candidate will oversee critical journalism practice and research and must hold a PhD in Journalism or Media Studies. Significant teaching and supervisory experience in a digital environment is required. The roles provide a unique opportunity to engage with the community and mentor future journalists. The position may be permanent or fixed-term.
The School of Journalism and Media Studies (JMS) invite suitably qualified candidates to shape the future of engaged digital journalism at Rhodes University. As a scholar and practitioner with a depth of experience in the study and practice of journalism, you’ll oversee the fusion of cutting‑edge journalism practice with transformative experiential learning and practice‑based research. As a core aspect of this work, you will take on the editorship of Grocott’s Mail, South Africa’s oldest independent newspaper (est. 1870), owned by the School of JMS. In this role, you will work alongside JMS colleagues to produce hyperlocal, solutions‑driven stories that bridge digital and historical divides, amplify marginalised voices, and hold power to account. This is a rare opportunity to research and publish globally on the frontiers of journalism education and practice, mentor self‑reflexive media leaders and drive civic impact in a city that needs and deserves accountable storytelling.
It is essential that prospective candidates read the role profile and further particulars document for further information and ensure that all relevant documentation is submitted.
Please note that handwritten applications will not be considered. Your application must be submitted via our website and online recruitment system. Failure to submit all documentation and respond to all the questions asked appropriately will result in an application being disqualified.
