Our client is seeking to employ an experienced Metrologist with a strong background in a press shop / automotive production environment. This role requires a technically skilled, analytical individual who can ensure precise measurement, calibration accuracy, and compliance with quality standards.
Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric with Mathematics and Science (essential).
- Appropriate Engineering qualification, such as Toolmaker (preferred).
- Minimum 3+ years’ experience in a similar metrology role within the automotive industry, ideally in press plant production.
- Strong understanding of press shop, tooling and welding processes.
- Expertise in measurement systems, CAD software, and CMM programming.
- Proficiency with PolyWorks or similar metrology software.
- Solid knowledge of GD& T principles.
- Working knowledge of SPC, including capability studies (Cp, Cpk).
- High proficiency in Excel, especially chart creation and data interpretation.
- Ability to generate clear technical reports.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Familiarity with 8D and 5-Why problem-solving techniques.
- Excellent judgement based on data analysis.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)
- Calibration & Verification:
- Calibrate all checking fixtures, gauges, and measurement instruments used to verify product conformance.
- Ensure parameter gauges are calibrated and suitable for use.
- Maintain calibration status of all metrology equipment, including the CMM.
- Auditing & Quality Assurance:
- Conduct periodic product audits according to schedule.
- Perform ad hoc audits of checking fixtures within plant areas, including identifying wear or abuse.
- Measure PPAP samples for capability studies.
- Data Analysis & Compliance:
- Generate and interpret SPC charts and capability indices.
- Analyse measurement data and escalate variances or inconsistencies.
- Ensure the MME register is updated when new equipment is added or cancelled.
- Maintenance & Coordination:
- Initiate repairs or maintenance of checking fixtures via job cards or email.
- Track job card progress and ensure timely completion.
- Arrange quotations and purchasing of measuring instruments and related accessories.
- Technical Support & Documentation:
- Maintain accurate calibration records and reports.
- Produce technical reports clearly and professionally.
- Support production teams with metrology-related troubleshooting.
