Job description
  • Package : R1 341 855. 00 (per annum) (All-inclusive package)
Requirements
  • Appropriate qualification that allows for registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery. No experience required after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Sound clinical knowledge and skills in Internal Medicine and Clinical Cardiology. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team. Computer literacy.
  • The following will be added advantage: The ideal candidate must be a highly skilled and experienced cardiothoracic surgeon with a strong background in performing complex surgeries involving the heart, lungs, oesophagus, and other organs within the chest, such as the trachea.
  • Reputable professional and personal attributes will play a key role in the appointment.
Duties
  • General: Strict observation of reporting lines.
  • Clinical: Expected to work closely with a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive patient care. Perform a wide range of cardiothoracic surgeries, including coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve repair/replacement, and lung resections. Additional skills, such as minimally invasive techniques and aspects of transplantation, would be an added advantage. Collaborate with cardiologists, pulmonologists, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement patient care plans. Participate in pre‑operative and post‑operative patient care, including consultations, follow‑ups, and management of complications. Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical protocols and guidelines. Oversee impeccable record‑keeping in the Division and regular clinical audits. Prepare monthly reports and data analytics to inform future safe practices. Ensure the smooth and efficient running of the Division by tirelessly assisting with procuring the tools of the trade and providing the timely motivations required for procurements. Observe the RWOPS policies and regulations. Continually contribute to impactful Standard Operating Procedures for increased patient safety and fellow staff members development.
  • Academic: Engage in continuous professional development and stay updated with the latest advancements in cardiothoracic surgery. Participate in teaching and mentoring medical students, registrars, and fellows across all University of the Witwatersrand’s teaching platforms or institutions. Teach allied professionals such as perfusionists, nurses, physicians, O.T., and dieticians about medicine.
  • Research: Dual appointment with the University and keeping up with the requirements for the dual appointment, which include but are not limited to self‑initiated research and supervision of undergraduate and post‑graduate research projects. Demonstrate continued commitment to yearly research output and promotion of university citizenship.
  • Personal attributes: Punctuality, collegiality, teamwork, dependability, and the observation of working hours per employment contract conditions will be expected at all times.

  • These positions will be joint appointments between the Gauteng Department of Health and the following academic institutions: University of Witwatersrand / University of Pretoria and / Sefako Makgatho University.
