VACANCY FOR MEDICAL DOCTOR AT HIGHWAY HOSPICE

The Highway Hospice in Durban seeks to appoint a Medical Doctor who is experienced and knowledgeable in palliative care. The main purpose of the Medical Doctor will be to spearhead the clinical leadership of the re-opening in-patient unit and the medical team. This dedicated incumbent will be responsible for networking and promoting Highway Hospice. This is a unique opportunity to play a vital role in enhancing a much-needed, famous palliative care service in Durban.

Requirements
  • Hold an MBChB (or equivalent MD)
  • Experience and training related to palliative care
  • Leadership and organisational skills and decision-making abilities
  • HPCSA Registration
  • PCNS (BHF) number would be preferred
  • Medical Indemnity
  • Good computer skills
  • Must have good networking, communication and interpersonal skills
  • An ability to assist with Palliative Medicine Training and Education
  • Valid driver’s licence
Advantageous
  • Palliative care qualification
  • Experience with healthcare service development or unit start-up
  • Dispensing licence would be a recommendation
Responsibilities
  • Lead the clinical setup and operational restart of the in-patient unit.
  • Co-ordinate and maintain medical and pharmaceutical cover within the organisation and assist with Palliative Medicine Training.
  • Ensure the unit complies with all relevant regulatory, ethical, and clinical standards.
  • Collaborate with management, nursing, and support teams to develop protocols, care pathways, and multidisciplinary team structures, whilst ensuring that all policies and procedures are kept updated according to COHSASA Standards.
  • Provide direct medical care to patients, including pain and symptom management by consulting with patients and families – onsite / telephonically / home visits.
  • Attend the weekly IDT meeting.
  • Meet with the Head of Nursing, providing professional mentorship and guidance.
  • Record-keeping related to patient care / statistics.
  • Train and mentor staff in palliative care principles and best practices.
