When you make the move to East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust, your only regret will be that you didn't do it sooner. We are a community of great people providing great healthcare, improving health and lives. Here, you can be confident of making a difference to our patients, our incredible healthcare teams and our dedicated medical students and doctors in training. The Kent & Medway Medical School has recently opened in Canterbury. This is a game‑changing opportunity and one which the two universities and Kent and Medway trusts have been working towards for several years. Successful applicants with an interest in medical education will be supported in taking up an honorary senior lecturer post at the medical school – subject to agreement by KMMS. Both London and the Continent are on your doorstep, with easy access to the capital, and to the Channel Ports and Channel Tunnel.

Main duties of the job

Critical Care at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother hospital is expanding. The unit provides a total of nine Level 3 capable beds, including three isolation rooms, and is extremely well located at the front of the hospital, immediately adjacent to the operating department and very close to the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit and radiology.

A recent business case successfully increased the consultant body from four to eight, which has allowed separation of the consultant on‑call rota from anaesthetics. A dedicated 1:8 Critical Care consultant rota is now in operation however close links and cooperation remain with the anaesthetic consultant on‑call for the site.

The unit has state‑of‑the‑art equipment, including Hamilton G5 ventilators at all bed spaces, including advanced modes of ventilation such as Adaptive Support Ventilation (ASV) and APRV. There is a strong focus on Critical Care ultrasound, including echocardiography. There are two FICE supervisors in the East Kent Critical Care consultant body and numerous FICE mentors, including Drs Ana Alegria and Ken Adegoke at QEQM and the unit boasts a Sonosite X‑Porte multi‑purpose ultrasound machine. There are strong links and cooperation in Echocardiography training with the team at William Harvey, where a yearly FICE course is run.
