Overview
We are seeking a proactive and experienced Inventory Controller to lead the setup and optimization of inventory management systems and practices at a remote mining operation in Southern Africa. This is a hands-on role requiring deep technical knowledge, strategic thinking, and the ability to coach and uplift local teams.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Inventory System Setup: Design and implement robust inventory control systems tailored to mining operations.
- Material Master Improvement:
- Standardize and enhance item coding
- Develop accurate technical descriptions
- Integrate OEM part numbers
- Establish and maintain min/max stock levels
- Stock Rationalization:
- Identify and eliminate redundant or obsolete stock
- Support disposal or repurposing strategies
- Bill of Materials (BoMs):
- Develop BoMs for critical assets and equipment
- Align BoMs with maintenance and procurement plans
- Material Requirements Planning (MRP):
- Initiate and manage MRP processes
- Forecast demand based on operational schedules
- Stock Holding Review:
- Audit current practices and procedures
- Recommend and implement improvements
- Inventory Optimization:
- Balance availability with cost-efficiency
- Reduce stockouts and overstocking
- Staff Coaching & Development:
- Train warehouse and procurement personnel
- Promote best practices and system literacy
- Stakeholder Management:
- Ensure ongoing communication with Management
- Conduct weekly head of section meetings, information sessions and training sessions where required or when there are process changes
- Ensure safety, legal and company policies are adhered to.
- Implement a culture of best-practice maintenance.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum 5 years experience in inventory control, preferably in mining or heavy industry
- Strong understanding of ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Pronto, Oracle)
- Proven experience in setting up inventory systems from scratch
- Technical aptitude in mechanical/electrical components and mining equipment
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently in remote and challenging environments
- Strong interpersonal and coaching skills
- Previous remote site or international mining experience advantageous
- Fluent in English
