Compliance Officer – Institutional & Business Clients

Reporting to the Head of Compliance Advisory, you will act as a subject matter expert for institutional compliance, working cross‑functionally with Country Compliance Officers to ensure seamless support for corporate clients across the group.

The role in a nutshell

This role is central to enabling Luno’s responsible growth in the B2B sector across our existing markets (South Africa, Nigeria, UK, Malaysia, Indonesia) and future expansion territories.

Your mission will be

  • Define and own the institutional compliance framework, ensuring a consistent and scalable approach to Know Your Business (KYB), Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD), and institutional risk assessments across all jurisdictions.
  • Collaborate closely with Country Compliance Officers in South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, UK, Malaysia and Indonesia to navigate local regulatory nuances regarding institutional clients, ensuring global standards are effectively localised.
  • Oversee the compliance execution for high‑risk institutional onboarding cases, acting as an escalation point for the Onboarding and Anti‑Financial Crime teams regarding complex ownership structures and source of funds.
  • Provide strategic oversight on new B2B products and services, ensuring they are developed and launched in a robust, responsible and compliant manner.
  • Support the expansion into new markets by defining the compliance requirements for institutional clients in those jurisdictions.
  • Collaborate strategically with the Heads of Compliance, Anti‑Financial Crime, Legal and Onboarding to provide seamless, end‑to‑end compliance support to the business.
In your first six months, you will
  • Immerse yourself in Luno, ensuring you have a deep understanding of our business, products and institutional clients globally.
  • Build strong relationships with the Institutional Sales team, the global team of Country Compliance Officers and key business stakeholders.
  • Assume ownership of the Institutional Compliance Advisory function, identifying and executing a strategic plan for continuous improvement and scalability of our B2B compliance processes.

  • At least 5‑7+ years of compliance / AML/CFT experience in the financial services, payments, or fintech industry, with a specific focus on institutional, corporate, or wholesale banking compliance.
  • Demonstrable experience in the cryptocurrency / VASP industry is a significant advantage.
  • Deep subject‑matter expertise in Know Your Business (KYB), complex corporate structures and global AML/CFT standards (FATF).
  • Extensive experience working across multiple jurisdictions. Familiarity with regulations in South Africa, Nigeria and / or Malaysia, or offshore jurisdictions is highly desirable.
  • Professional compliance, AML/CFT, or risk‑related certifications (e.g., CAMS, ICA) are highly desirable.
  • A pragmatic and responsible approach to balancing regulatory obligations with business enablement.
  • The ability to collaborate and influence across geographies, functional areas and at various levels of the organisation.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, both written and verbal.
