Position: Engineering Planner

The above vacancy exists for an Engineering Planner at Life Entabeni Hospital reporting to the Engineering Manager.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning and management of all maintenance tasks; manage and coordinate all routine services and emergency breakdowns; procure maintenance related spares & materials via SAP; manage the SAP system; manage all contractors' access on site and carry out secretarial and administrative duties of the maintenance department when the engineering administrator is not available. Critical Outputs
Maintenance
  • Develop detailed maintenance plans for all plant and equipment.
  • Draw up and review method statements for shutdown and scheduled maintenance.
  • Schedule maintenance activities across the facility leveraging relationships with operations personnel.
  • Continually improve planning, scheduling, purchasing, stores data management and job reporting systems to increase planning effectiveness and efficiency and arrange resources to conduct work.
  • Open and close all jobs and effectively plan and schedule to meet maintenance targets.
  • Ensure all parts, labour and buy‑outs are on the jobs.
  • Update and review SAP works orders.
  • Develop and implement new maintenance processes throughout various plant and equipment when required.
  • Use data to predict maintenance needs.
  • Organise spare parts inventories to prepare for emergency or preventative maintenance needs.
  • Communicate with managers to inform on maintenance activities performed and availability of equipment.
  • Foster a culture of safety awareness through correct maintenance processes.
  • Ensure that health safety and environment (OHS act 85 of 1993) is the number one priority and that the maintenance department’s housekeeping is continually monitored and attended to.
  • Ensure data integrity on SAP PM.
  • Improve, develop and report on maintenance KPIs.
  • Communicate and track remedial action linked to failures and estimate job duration with the responsible persons and the clients.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate risk in alignment with legal regulations and Life Healthcare standards, procedures and policies.
  • Effectively engage stakeholders to ensure smooth workflow.
  • Effectively self‑manage in alignment with Life Healthcare values.
  • Ensure all internal beneficiaries of maintenance receive timely, efficient and quality service.
  • Ensure plant and equipment reliability factor improves and trends are effectively managed.
  • Provide a central source of information concerning maintenance work, equipment and equipment repair.
  • Proactively drive maintenance cost while improving conditions of equipment and operating facilities.
  • Collaborate effectively with maintenance personnel to anticipate repair work before jobs become emergencies.
  • Provide sound root‑cause analysis to the maintenance team of equipment failures and proper documentation of such incidents.
  • Regularly assess quality of maintenance planning, recording and archiving in line with ISO quality standards.
Projects
  • Understand project specifications and develop time schedules and budgets that meet them.
  • Negotiate with vendors and contractors to secure the best prices.
  • Observe existing processes, analyse staff performance and address deficiencies accordingly.
  • Monitor and track project progress and write up reports.
  • Attend and schedule meetings as required.
  • Delegate tasks and ensure workers provide feedback.
  • Understand and meet all contract requirements.
  • Communicate with managers and the rest of the team.
  • Analyse technical drawings and provide material and cost estimates.
  • Ensure all projects are completed on time, quality, safe and within budgets.
  • Supervise installation and initial start‑up of engineering equipment.
  • Develop and maintain relations with the Engineering Manager, quality and maintenance department.
  • Assist Engineering Manager with incident investigation and data.
  • Assist Engineering Manager in staff management through collection of staff performance data.
  • Be prepared to do standby duty when needed.
Requirements
  • At least N5 qualification with Trade Test in either Mechanical or Electrical (Heavy Current) engineering with a minimum of 3 years in operations or engineering maintenance, or S4 in Electrical or Mechanical engineering with a minimum of 1 year in operations or engineering maintenance.
  • Practical experience in a hospital environment or a similar environment is essential.
  • Computer literacy and experience on a CMMS, preferably SAP PM, would be an added advantage.
