A culinary education institution in Durban seeks a kitchen support professional to assist with prep work and support senior chefs in creating desserts. The role involves supervising junior pastry staff and maintaining high hygiene standards. Ideal candidates will have kitchen experience, preferably in upscale dining or similar environments. Position Summary: fundamental kitchen support, focusing on prep work (mise en place) like washing, chopping, and seasoning ingredients, assisting senior chefs with cooking tasks, maintaining strict hygiene and cleanliness at their station, managing inventory, and learning essential culinary techniques for their designated section (meat, fish, pastry, etc.) to build a strong foundation for career progression.
Working closely with the Executive Chef and the Sous Chef Pastry, you will also supervise and train the 1st Cook Pastry, Pastry Cook, and Assistant Pastry Cook. You will be responsible for creating desserts indicated in the menu plan; ensure that food is properly stored and all work areas are cleaned according to USPH standards; and ensure all equipment and machinery are properly functioning.
