Summary
Must lead in the technical documentation and design of a consistent, quality product and interact effectively with the project team and client. Essential for hire to this position are superior communication, problem solving, design and management skills. Enthusiasm for challenges, quality construction documents, and the architecture profession are also required.
Role Context
The Senior Architect, operating remotely through virtual meetings, will provide technical leadership and guidance to staff Architects, Architectural Associates, and outside consultants. Teams typically consist of 2–7 persons.
Responsibilities
- Share responsibility for project technical documentation with the Project Architect
- Report to the Project Architect
- Supervise staff Architects and Architectural Associates
- Work on projects from 5,000 sq. ft. to 200,000 sq. ft. (interior, ground-up construction, and renovation)
- Writing Proposals

- Help identify tasks, time, and fees for potential projects
- Help determine project feasibility
- Assist in creating project schedules and proposals
- Programming

- Apply program and develop space needs with associated square footages in preliminary massing diagrams
- Conduct zoning and building code review
- Preparing for Field Verification

- Identify potential challenges and assist team in reviewing existing drawings and data
- Produce drawings using Revit
- Design

- Help establish design concepts
- Create 3D representations of design concepts
- Plan spaces, including vehicular and pedestrian circulation
- Lead code research and apply requirements or note violations
- Develop elevations, building sections, and details
- Coordinate with MEP, Structural, Civil, and other consultants
- Assist with development of probable cost statements

- Coordinate and execute Contract Documents and specifications
- Coordinate bidding and construction documentation with the project manager

- Identify emerging markets and industry trends
- Help identify client needs and service delivery methods
- Maintain positive client relationships and educate clients (when applicable)
- Promote Brook Architecture to existing and prospective clients

- Assist with team assignments, project budgets, and client invoices (Ajera software)
- Produce documents using Microsoft Word, Excel, and additional software as required
- Develop project team structures to meet client goals and fees
- Communicate effectively with clients (internal and external), including recording and distributing communication
- Estimate task completion times for project schedules
- Contribute to drawing and design library development
- Produce meeting minutes
- Help coordinate distribution of documents to agencies
Skills and Experience
The following skills and extended experience are required:
- Identifying Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and understanding governance and hierarchy *
- Understanding and applying code requirements:
- International Building Code
- ADA
- Local building codes (Chicago codes will be trained during onboarding) *
- Translating design solutions into project details and preparing building details (foundation, wall, window, roofing) that mitigate water/air infiltration *
- Understanding architectural services, phases, and typical fees as defined by AIA standards *
*Mastery of skills 1–4 is required within 30 days of hire
Additional required skills
- Creating construction documents/presentation drawings using Revit, SketchUp, Photoshop, Enscape
- Understanding client relationships (implied and stated desires)
- Managing Revit model setup and BIM collaboration
- Developing design concepts and communicating via 2D/3D graphics
- Strong verbal and written communication
- Researching progressive architectural concepts and applications
- Organizing and prioritizing project tasks
- Applying dimensioning, tagging, and specifications to drawing setup

Salary
- US$40,000/year (part-time)
- 20 hrs/wk
- Work window: 9am–5pm CST, Monday–Friday
