As our Controller, Global Finance & Operations, you will be the chief architect of our international accounting systems and financial data flow. You will build and lead a world-class operation to provide timely, accurate, and strategic financial insights across our complex, multi-entity structure.

This is a hands-on strategic role crucial to scaling our global impact.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Global System Architecture: design and implement a modern, scalable global accounting framework (multi-entity, multi-currency), utilizing Quickbooks Online as the core accounting system, that supports our evolving organizational structure.
  • Timely Reporting: deliver monthly financial statements (separate and consolidated) by the established deadline, complete with insightful analysis.
  • Team Leadership: cultivate and lead a high-performing domestic and international accounting team of employees and outsourced partners, fostering a culture of accountability, operational excellence, and continuous professional development.
  • 100% Compliance: ensure continuous, 100% accounting, tax, and audit compliance across New Story and its domestic and international subsidiaries (non-profit and for-profit entities).
  • Process Excellence: define, document, and embed best accounting practices, policies, and robust internal controls across all global financial operations.
  • Financial Reporting & Consolidations: own the timely and complete execution of the global month-end accounting close and reconciliation process.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements and reports at separate subsidiary and consolidated global levels.
  • Document all inter-company agreements, ensuring accurate inter-company transactions, eliminations, and multi-currency consolidations.
  • Manage amortization and depreciation schedules and entries.
  • Compliance, Audit & Risk: lead and successfully execute all financial and tax audits; provide external auditors with necessary documentation and comprehensive support.
  • Oversee the timely preparation and filing of the annual U.S. Form 990 and all other corporate tax filings, fulfilling all corporate reporting requirements.
  • Partner closely with international CPAs and tax advisors to manage compliance and mitigate risk across all jurisdictions.
  • Proactively ensure compliance with evolving U.S. federal, state, and local payroll tax laws (e.g., W-2, reporting) and the specific labor, social security, and tax regulations in Mexico.
  • Global Financial Operations & Systems Management: lead the current accounting team, consisting of outsourced U.S. and Mexico-based bookkeeping and accounting service providers, with a goal of building out the internal capacity.
  • Own and administer payroll processing for employees and contractors in the U.S. and Mexico, ensuring timely payments and accurate withholdings, deductions, and supplemental payments using our HRIS and payroll platforms, Rippling and Plane.
  • Manage the A/P function, including processes, approvals, payments, vendor resolution, and spend variance analysis – our current stack includes Bill.Com, Divvy, AMEX, and various U.S. and Mexican banks.
  • Manage the A/R and Revenue function, including complex revenue recognition, reporting, and reconciliation of donations and earned revenue from investment and development related activities – our current stack includes Salesforce, Funraise, Stripe, and various donation platforms for cash, stock, and crypto.
  • Define, document, and ensure adherence to best-in-class accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls company-wide.
  • Strategic Partnership: assist the CFO with Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A), strategic KPI, and quarterly Board of Directors (BOD) reporting.
  • Eagerly assist in other corporate projects such as insurance renewals, corporate registrations, or other compliance initiatives that support the objectives of the Finance team.
Who You Are (Required)
  • 10+ years of progressive professional accounting experience, with at least 5 years in an accounting management or leadership capacity.
  • Demonstrated international accounting experience, including proficiency with multi-currency, multi-entity structures, complex inter-company transactions, consolidations, and eliminations.
  • Proven experience architecting and implementing accounting systems and frameworks that successfully manage the flow of complex financial information from a variety of sources and utilizing Quickbooks Online as the core accounting system.
  • Professional fluency in English and Spanish (written and verbal) is required given the deep engagement in U.S. and Mexico operations.
  • BA / BS degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Travel: if working U.S. Remote, travel is required 8-10 times per year (up to 20%), often to our office in Mexico City.
  • Preferred: CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation is highly preferred.
  • Experience with non-profit accounting and/or real estate development accounting.

Reporting Structure

This role is an individual contributor that reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

Location & Compensation

We are prioritizing candidates in the United States (remote welcome with flexibility to travel to Mexico City up to 20% of the time) as well as candidates located in Mexico City.
