Locum Consultant Psychiatrist - Central Bristol Crisis Service

Are you a Consultant Psychiatrist who is passionate about improving mental health services?

Do you want to work for a Trust whose priority is to provide high quality compassionate care?

The Trust is seeking a Locum consultant psychiatrist to join the Central Bristol Intensive ( crisis ) Team.

This is a newly created post. The consultant will provide clinical advice and leadership for Central Intensive Team and will work collaboratively with another part-time consultant.

This post offers unique flexibility, you can work 0.6 WTE or 1.0 WTE. You may choose to work 0.8 WTE or full time and dedicate up to two days to Bristol Place of Safety and work alongside the on call consultant based at the Place of Safety 9-5. There are dedicated 2.5 SPA time.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant will deliver direct interventions, including emergency assessment, to service users at a level of intensity according to need, including those service users who require an assertive approach. This will include on-going assessment, diagnoses (including review and clarification) and treatment of mental and physical health needs.

Provide visible and clear leadership at team level.

Supervision for the medical team and non-medical prescribers.

The Consultant will take medical responsibility for the patients on the team's caseload and should participate in gate keeping and attendance at MHA assessments.

The consultant, should they choose to accept additional PAs to cover the Place of Safety, is expected to see up to two patients admitted under S 136 / day and to participate in their assessments alongside the on - call consultant.

We have an on - call rota that covers daytime assessments at the Place of Safety so the post holder would act as a second doctor.

The consultant is expected to liaise with the emergency services and our community teams in order to help them devise community support plans for patients who are frequently detained under S 136.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Relevant Higher Degree e.g MD,PHD,Msc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of gaining CCT
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
  • CCT in General Adult Psychiatry
Experience
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in a community setting.
  • Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement
Personal Skills
  • To possess leadership skills and be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work
  • Ability to appraise own performance as a Consultant.
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, in order to effectively work with patients, carers and staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Evidence of specific achievements that demonstrate leadership skills
Clinical Skills
  • Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in Adults of working age and to deal with crisis situations.
Knowledge
  • Understanding of the management skills required to function successfully as a Consultant.
  • Awareness of current issues in mental health service provision, policy and legislation.
  • Knowledge of alternatives to inpatient admission care approaches
Teaching
  • Commitment to and experience of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching.
  • Experience as an Educational Supervisor for trainees
Research and Audit
  • Experience or involvement in a research project and publication.
  • Experience of carrying out an audit project.
Management
  • Evidence of management/leadership skills training.
  • Previous management experience including that of other junior medical staff
