Clinical Scientist/Highly Specialised Sleep Physiologist

Provides advanced specialist pediatric clinical respiratory and Sleep service to children attending the department at Birmingham Children's Hospital. Patients may suffer from a wide variety of medical disorders, a significant proportion of which are respiratory or sleep in nature.

You will interact with scientific and medical staff within the respiratory & sleep physiology team and wider key stakeholders (clinical referral teams, patients, families and general public). Provides advanced specialist Paediatric Clinical Respiratory & sleep service to children and their families attending the department and across non-dedicated environments within the Birmingham Children's Hospital. Patients may suffer from a wide variety of medical disorders of both lung function and sleep origin. Analyse and interpret highly complex results and provision of factual reports, provide education, line management and clinical supervision of junior staff and advice to clinicians. Act as lead sleep specialist, including service provision, teaching, audit and quality of a specialist area of clinical sleep service delivery in conjunction with the lung function department manager. Work alone and collaboratively with others on a day-to-day basis to ensure that service needs are met and to plan and prioritise own workload. Responsibility for the day-to-day decision making in the Lung Function and Sleep service in the absence of the Head of Department, as required.

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

Plan, perform and interpret a range of advanced specialist respiratory & sleep diagnostic investigations to a high level of competence on children without supervision, with appropriate actions taken as necessary to obtain maximum results.

Be involved in the appropriate deployment and supervision of staff and resource management and collaborate with other professionals and agencies to ensure service provision meets professional standards. Performs regular machine checks on all Lung Function/ Sleep equipment, documents any faults found and takes appropriate action where necessary.

Undertake non-invasive ventilation (NIV) titration to patients when required, complying with Trust policy and department protocol. Use highly developed skills and judgement to determine when a patient requires emergency attention, discussing findings with appropriate medical staff. Provide support and assistance to respiratory & sleep physiology staff in dealing with difficult and conflicting situations including those that are of a clinical/professional nature. Analyses, scores and reports urgent sleep studies in a timely manner and upload reports on Hyperspace. Organize, attend and contribute to sleep MDT, service development meetings and ward rounds.

Analyse and interpret complex sleep data, provide factual reports to medical staff, act on and alert any unexpected abnormal test results to the line manager or medical staff and oversee reports formulated by junior staff.

Person Specification
KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE
  • Practical experience and familiarity with the range of specialist and advanced sleep physiological investigations
  • Training in advanced skills and knowledge within relevant field
  • Experience performing with paediatric patients
  • Experience of advanced sleep physiology investigations in the paediatric age range e.g. Full Polsomnography
ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS
  • Experience in planning, performing and interpreting a range of paediatric sleep physiological investigations
  • Able to work autonomously
  • Able to undertake complex hand‑eye co‑ordination tasks for the use of diagnostic equipment
Qualifications
  • STP Respiratory & Sleep Physiology qualification or equivalent Masters course, Certificate of equivalence at STP level
  • Bsc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (respiratory) or equivalent
  • HCPC registration (or working towards) as Clinical Scientist
  • ARTP/Sleep professional body exams/other sleep qualification
  • Chartered Scientist
PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE
  • Ability to provide formal teaching and/or supervision to junior staff or visitors to the department
ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS
  • Can concentrate for prolonged periods e.g. when analysing, scoring and reporting complex sleep studies
  • Capable of dealing with highly distressing circumstances e.g. dealing with children with challenging/severely challenging behaviour
  • Capable of communicating complex and sensitive information to children, relatives and carers, including children with learning or physical disabilities
  • Ability to communicate with staff at all levels including consultants, medical staff, nurses, admin and clerical and hotel services staff
PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE
  • Able to cope with frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions such as body fluids, head lice, aggression (verbal and occasionally physical) and contained chemicals such as acetone and collodion
  • Can coordinate and cooperate with others to plan and prioritise workload
