Offer Description

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to come and work with us in the Centre for Society and Mental Health (KCL), across the Department for Psychological Medicine (IOPPN campus) and in partnership with the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) at UCL.

You will work closely with Professor Jayati Das‑Munshi (KCL) and Professor George Ploubidis and Dr Dario Moreno‑Agostino (UCL) in this partnership, to lead the work of the ‘Maximising the Value of Existing Cohorts’ or data hub, in the CSMH. In this role you will lead research using longitudinal datasets (cohorts) housed at CLS, UCL and elsewhere, to understand the antecedents and consequences of mental health over the life course, with a focus on inequalities. In particular, this is an exciting opportunity to work with novel data linkages (for example, population cohorts linked to health records or administrative data) and to extend the work of this hub which had previously explored intersectional and intergenerational differences in long‑term psychological distress trajectories.

You will be encouraged to consider the impact of your work by engaging with policy makers. In addition you will be supported to work with people with lived experience to inform your research. You will be encouraged to develop projects using cohort linkages to health and administrative data to examine population mental health inequalities. You will be supported to take a lead in the development of grant applications for external funding, to support the development of the research programme, and supported to contribute to the supervision of research students and to CSMH and KCL teaching, workshops and training events.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 2 years.

Applicants needs to be able to be based on location (Denmark Hill campus, IOPPN), London and willing to travel/ work at UCL, CLS (Institute of Education) and KCL CSMH (Strand Campus) (Central London), UK.

Key skills and experience required:

  • Experience in at least two of the following: Mental health epidemiology, Social Epidemiology, Social determinants of health, Working with data linkage/ linked data
  • Experience of working with large-scale, longitudinal data (eg. population cohorts, health records, etc)
  • Proficiency in statistical analyses and use of relevant statistical packages (Stata, R, MPLUS etc.)
  • Experience in leading design of research programmes
  • Research expertise in population mental health and health inequalities
  • A record of teaching related to mental health and/or quantitative methods
  • Track record of publications in peer reviewed scientific journals
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to write clearly and concisely, and to present to both academic and non-academic audiences.
  • Ability to present information on research progress and outcomes to supervisory team
  • Ability to prioritise a varied workload to meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy
