Make a real impact in Higher Education.

Advance HE is seeking a Researcher to design, lead and deliver impactful, research led consultancy projects across the UK and international higher education sector.

You’ll work across themes such as EDI, leadership, staff development, educational excellence, strategic transformation and student voice, using mixed methods research to scope, bid for and deliver high profile projects.

As part of a small research team within the Insights function, you’ll help shape our consultancy portfolio and demonstrate our expertise to sector stakeholders.

You’ll also use your data visualisation skills to develop dashboard based insights for members, particularly around equality and diversity data. Evaluation will be another key area, contributing to how we design evaluation led consultancy and assess the impact of our own major services.

Job Requirements:

We’re seeking a mixed methods researcher with strong quantitative and qualitative skills, plus hands on experience with data visualisation tools such as Tableau. You’ll be confident leading projects independently while also working collaboratively, engaging directly with senior stakeholders and clients.

Ideally, you’ll bring strong networks within the higher education sector and a track record of building partnerships that lead to meaningful impact.

You should have a solid understanding of theory based evaluation approaches and be able to communicate these clearly to clients.

Crucially, you’ll understand how research led methods can shape effective consultancy solutions across areas such as EDI, strategic transformation, leadership and educational excellence.

The key skills we are looking for include:
  • Demonstrable experience of working with primary and secondary quantitative data, including designing, analysing and interpreting findings from surveys, as well as analysing data from national datasets, (e.g. HESA’s staff and student records), to provide meaningful insights for clients, members and the wider sector
  • Demonstrable experience of a wide range of qualitative methodologies, including interviews and focus groups, with the ability to apply appropriate research techniques to gather, analyse, and interpret data, ensuring robust and insightful outcomes.
  • Knowledge of evaluation methodologies, including theory-based evaluation, and impact assessments.
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments in higher education
  • Knowledge of Tableau and Power BI with a willingness to further develop these skills in this role.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills in Excel, SPSS or R, and ability to use qualitative analysis software packages, like Atlas.ti, NVivo or CoLoop.
  • Experience in producing high quality research outputs for multiple audiences.

Our strategic goals to enhance confidence and trust in higher education, address systemic inequalities and advance education to meet the evolving needs of students and society, supports the work of our members and the sector.

Using our expertise and sharing best practice, we work with our network of global associates and partners, and with people, providers and systems around the world to understand contexts and challenges and deliver solutions.

It is our people and the people we help that really make us who we are!
