A local government recruitment agency is seeking an Interim Assistant Director of Communications and PR to lead strategic communication functions in London. The role involves developing the council's communication strategy, advising senior leaders, and managing corporate campaigns. Experience in local government is essential. This is a hybrid position lasting 3 months with an inside IR35 status.

We are seeking an AD of Communications to lead a strategic communications function and help position the council as an ambitious, collaborative and resident-focused organisation. You will shape the council’s public narrative, ensure communications are proactive and insight‑led, and support elected members and senior leaders to communicate clearly, confidently, and consistently.
- Lead development of the council’s overall communications strategy, corporate narrative and annual priorities
- Act as the council’s principal adviser on communications, public sentiment, behavioural insights and strategic messaging
- Communicate the council’s priorities and impact internally and externally, supporting the organisation’s strategic vision and missions
- Provide confident, politically astute advice to Cabinet, senior officers, and Members
- Lead major corporate campaigns that drive behaviour change, promote local priorities and build trust and pride in the borough
- Previous experience in a similar role within Local Government
- Ability to influence senior leaders, Members and external stakeholders
- Expertise in narrative development and simplifying complex messages.
- Strong capability across modern multi‑channel communications and digital engagement.
