Job description

The Planning and Performance Directorate is at the heart of the City Council, helping us drive performance and understand how we can best meet the diverse needs of our residents and deliver effective services. We are leading the use of data and technology to support the Council's work, exploring how improved data and technology can enhance our processes and make it easier for residents to access the support they need. The Performance and Insights Team champions a culture of better decisions using data, evidence and engagement across the city and the Council. The Performance and Insights team consists of over twenty analysts brought together from around the organisation with different backgrounds and skills to support services to deliver data-driven change. We value diverse perspectives and experiences and are striving to create an inclusive workplace culture, is accepting of all and is free from discrimination and bias. In line with our One Coventry Values, we want to ensure that our communities are represented across our workforce. A vital part of this is ensuring we are a truly inclusive organisation that encourages diversity in all respects, including diversity of thinking. We particularly welcome applicants from minority ethnic, LGBT+, disabled and neurodiverse communities to make a real difference to our residents so that equity and respect remains at the heart of everything we do.

What is the job role?

We are on a mission to become a fully data-driven council - and we want you to be part of it. As a Data Apprentice, you’ll help turn raw information into insights that genuinely shape the lives of Coventry residents. You’ll join a dynamic, curious and innovative team where no two days look the same. Expect to collaborate with analysts, technical specialists and community-focused teams while building your skills from the ground up. You’ll learn how to: work with colleagues and partners to understand what data they need, team up with technical experts to create real solutions, build dashboards and visuals that anyone can understand, turn messy datasets into clear, meaningful stories, and support insight work that shapes services for new and existing communities.

Who are we looking for?

You’ll smash this role if you:

  • Enjoy problem‑solving and exploring data from different angles
  • Can communicate clearly – whether that’s writing, presenting or breaking down complex info
  • Work well with others and can build positive relationships
  • Can stay focused and deliver in a fast‑moving environment
  • Have a passion for data and are ready to learn about PowerBI, Python, R or SQL

All candidates must have the Right to Work in the UK. We are currently not offering sponsorship for this role.
