The Technical and Failure Investigation Department (TFI) is part of Lloyds Register Advisory Services, providing world-class technical investigation services to global clients. The selected candidate will conduct technical investigations using computer-based analytical methods and deliver detailed reports.

The role
- Perform numerical assessments and provide specialist advice for service delivery research or development work within agreed parameters that include budget constraints and contractual requirements.
- Produce report deliverables within the agreed parameters in an appropriate format and review other employees’ work as requested.
- Provide technical support to other Advisory service teams, including occasional on‑site data acquisition and analysis assistance; may involve foreign travel.
- Discuss and present the deliverable with internal/external clients and suggest alternative solutions where appropriate.
- Undertake administration as required in line with current processes and procedures.
- Produce proposals and define required work to satisfy client expectations, ensuring consistency of proposals to clients according to established procedures.
- Assess/recommend the time/value of the work to be undertaken for an internal/external client within an agreed fee/cost structure and within the commercial aspects of the contract.
- Make recommendations based on client feedback to assist in service delivery improvement and to help build the business.
- Be proactive in sharing knowledge with the team and advising colleagues based on reviews and own experience; build an internal network of contacts to gain knowledge from senior personnel within Lloyds Register.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation and industry standards.
- Pursue Continuous Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
- Mentor/coach other technical employees to achieve effective technical knowledge transfer and application.
- Undertake project management where applicable, including monitoring project progress and spend against budget and contract requirements.
What you bring
- A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyds Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum 2‑year programme) or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution with relevant sea‑going experience as a certificated ships officer.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
- Working towards achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
- Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work.
- Familiarity with MATLAB, Python, LabView and FORTRAN would be an advantage.
- Understanding of signal processing and data analysis techniques.
- Working knowledge and good experience of numerical methods such as finite element and boundary element methods (NASTRAN, ABAQUS, ANSYS, MSC Marc, FEMAP) for stress analysis and fatigue analysis (including spectral fatigue). Knowledge of linear fracture mechanics tools such as CRACKWISE or BEASY and structural reliability‑based techniques and probabilistic analyses would be an advantage.
- General knowledge of marine power plant engineering with emphasis on static shaft alignment analysis and dynamic response (torsional, axial, lateral and 6‑DOF vibration analysis) of marine propulsion shafting systems, including diesel engines, electric motors, gearing, dampers, couplings, Cardan shafts, rolling element and journal bearings, fixed‑pitch and controllable‑pitch propellers, etc.
- Ability to apply knowledge and experience to a wide range of technical investigations in the marine and offshore industry, providing timely solutions in line with client expectations.
- Technical report writing skills.
- Eligibility to live and work in the UK and meet standard visa requirements for overseas travel.
- Ability to achieve UK Naval security clearance without restrictions.
