Neurodiversity Mental Health Practitioner

The CAMHS Neurodiversity Service is an established pathway within the Plymouth CAMHS service, providing services for 5-18 year olds that have a mental health need plus a neurodiverse diagnosis or presentation (awaiting assessment), this can include ADHD, Autism, Learning disability, Tic or Tourettes. It has been fortunate to have had extensive expansion over the last few years, developing the intervention and the 'support whilst you wait' offer to young people and families, alongside its existing assessment service element. You would be joining and friendly, enthusiastic and experienced multi professional team completing holistic assessments, support and intervention to a young people with (or suspected) neurodiverse presentation/diagnosis.

All Livewell Southwest staff are expected to able and willing to work across a 7 day service.

Main duties of the job

This role is responsible forsupporting the emotional, psychological and social wellbeing of children andyoung people who have or are suspected of having a Neuro developmental Disorder( ADHD, Learning disability, Autism, Tics or Tourettes).

This is an ideal opportunity to expand your experience within a leadership role, as you will take the lead for the Intensive and Intervention Support Team within the CAMHS Neurodiversity service. Providing line management to unregistered staffing, managing the waiting lists and as part of an MDT manage the referrals coming into the service.The postholder will provide a holistic assessment for children and young people, whichwill involve close liaison with the multi-agency network; including schools andsocial care. The post holder will join a Multi-disciplinary Team and will workclosely with other teams within the CAMHS service. They will hold a case loadof complex need relating to the young persons neurodiversity or ongoingneurodiverse assessment and has co-morbidity of mental health needs. They willassess and risk manage cases and provided clinical lead to non-registered stafffor delegated tasks.

The post holder will provide specialist clinical practiceinto the team for children and young people with neuro-developmental disorders,delivering intervention within best evidence and to the highest possiblestandard.

Job responsibilities

To provide clinical input to the team, delivering practice within bestevidence and to the highest possible standard. The post sits within the neurodiversitypathway within CAMHS based within the city offering mental health andneuro-developmental assessment and treatment interventions in line with NICEGuidelines. This can include individualwork, group work and consultation.

The post holder will demonstrate effective skills in the assessment andreassessment of risk and complex behaviour issues and communicate concernsaccurately in a timely fashion. This isinclusive of priority assessments and requires multi-agency responses to riskassessment and risk management plans. Thiswill also include completing recognised assessments as part of the team toprovide evidence for potential diagnosis when appropriate.

The post holder will makean autonomous decision about the treatment, time of discharge, and agree withthe child, young person and family/carers as well as multi-agency keypartners. Communicate a summary of thework undertaken and how to sustain improvements made and include correspondenceto General Practitioner.

The post holder is required to maintain high effective standards in therecording of clinical observations and actions, risk and risk managementincluding child protection in health records.All roles may involve work with families at their homes, education andcommunity settings and at base as appropriate/required by children/young peopleand their families.

The post holder willcontribute to the CAMHS Duty Rota whichoperates on a daily basis.The post holder willplay a role in encouraging and co-coordinating collaboration between allagencies by attending multi-agency meetings such as multi-agency CAF meetings,child protection case conferences, education reviews etc, to provide a mentalhealth perspective.

Participate in the training of other colleagues and students in areas ofown expertise.To provide line management and supervision of colleagues of a lowerbanding within the post holders sphere of knowledge

  • Knowledge of a range of mental health problems and disorders affecting children and young people who are in care.
  • Knowledge of theories of child development and their application to practice.
  • Well established case management skills and good organisational skills with ability to prioritise
