The role
An exciting opportunity has arisen at the University of Surrey, who are seeking an enthusiastic Health and Safety Advisor with strong biosafety experience to work within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences to provide professional advice and guidance and promote compliance.
As the successful candidate you will support the Faculty Health and Safety Manager in the management of health and safety across the Faculty and at times across the University. You will work closely with academics, researchers, and students to promote best practices in health and safety and contribute to the development of a robust health and safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Participating in the broad range of work undertaken by the Faculty’s Health and Safety team particularly in identifying unsafe or unhealthy conditions of work or work practices and recommending preventative action
- Investigating incidents
- Participate in faculty safety inspections
- Act as Secretary to the University Biosafety Committee
- Develop and maintain faculty health and safety documentation
- Liaising with members of the wider Faculty to provide general health and safety advice
- Participating in the development and delivery of health and safety training
- Oversee the operation of FHMS stores
About You
You will have a degree in a scientific subject as well as experience of managing safety within the laboratory environment. It is essential that you have strong communication and organisational skills, experience and sound working knowledge of COSHH (both chemical and biological) and a proven track record in applying health and safety legislation in the workplace.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual with:
- A degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
- NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (If you don’t have this qualification but do have relevant experience please still apply as your application will be considered).
- Biosafety Practitioner level 1 or equivalent relevant experience
- Proven experience in a professional Health and Safety role in a scientific or laboratory environment
- It is essential that you have experience and sound working knowledge of COSHH (both chemical and biological)
- Experience of educating staff on health and safety matters through training delivery
- Evidence of effective record maintenance
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, solutions focused output
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to coach and mentor staff at all levels of the Faculty to follow documented health and safety guidance.
- Willingness to keep up to date with relevant health and safety legislation through continual professional development (CPD) and vocational training
