Job description
Role Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, visionary Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Immunology (Band 6) to join our dynamic and thriving team of 9 BMS’s and 4 AHCS’s in our Immunology laboratory. The Immunology service is based at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and serves the Kent and Medway Pathology Network (KMPN). We are UKAS ISO 15189; 2022 accredited as are all Pathology disciplines within the organisation. Services provided include autoimmune serology, allergy, protein electrophoresis, specific protein measurement and cryoprotein investigations. The laboratory works closely with our consultant Immunologist supporting allergy and immunology clinics in addition to planning the delivery and development of laboratory services. Immunology has a strong training ethos linked to career development and progression.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake scientific tasks within all appropriate sections of the department as delegated by senior staff including monitoring the performance of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and (S)AHCS.
  • Process laboratory samples and produce timely, accurate and relevant results and reports in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Undertake routine analytical work involving both automated and manual techniques.
  • Make timely and accurate decisions regarding the efficient and safe functioning of the laboratories considering health and safety and other relevant legislation. However, they must be able to recognise when to seek advice from more senior staff.
  • Develop and implement systems and procedures within the Department to enable the service to run effectively, and to ensure it complies with legal requirements.
  • Assist in service developments including evaluation of new assays.
  • Postholder will be expected to use initiative in all areas of work.
Essential Requirements
  • Applicants should be effective leaders, have significant Immunology knowledge and experience, and have a good track record of managing staff and laboratory resources.
  • Must be able to demonstrate achievement of targets, implementing service developments and service transformation initiatives, a high attention to detail and excellent communication skills.
Professional Criteria
  • The suitable candidate must be HCPC registered and hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Immunology. Applicants who can evidence that they are 3 months to completion of their Specialist Portfolio will be considered. This requires the post holder to have current membership with the IBMS which is not funded by the Trust.
