Locum Consultant Paediatrician

Closing date: 05 January 2026

Scunthorpe General Hospital provides a busy service giving wide experience in acute general paediatrics, surgery, ENT, dermatology, orthopaedic and dental children.

With very few exceptions, all children under 16 years requiring hospitalisation are admitted on the Children's Unit. This consists of 18 in-patient beds used between surgery and medicine. There is a 4-bedded paediatric assessment and observation unit co-located on the children's ward. A separate area on the Unit is used for adolescents and a further separate area for day cases and assessment. Two additional Paediatric High Dependency beds are situated on the ward. We have a consultant of the week system, with two consultants each doing daily ward rounds on Disney ward and the neonatal intensive care unit. There are approximately 2,200 acute medical paediatric admissions annually and 2,000 surgical admissions. All present Consultants have special areas of expertise within Paediatrics.

Community Services

There is a children's community nursing team that facilitates early discharge and provides acute follow up and long term care. This is a 7 day service.

There is also the Neonatal Community Nursing Service that provides follow up in the community 5 days per week. The Children's Community nursing team provides cross cover for the remaining 2 days.

Main duties of the job

As a senior employee of the Trust the post-holder will work in close co-operation with, and support, other clinical, medical, professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust's patients.

The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for such irregular commitments outside normal duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

The post holder will be encouraged to undertake skill-based courses as appropriate.

The post holder will be expected to work together as a team within the Women and Children's Group.

To ensure the maintenance of any relevant accreditation by taking part in appropriate continuing professional medical education.

To take part in appropriate multidisciplinary training in areas appropriate to their field.

To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust's procedures and operating policies.

To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust's and Operational Group's services plans.

To provide effective leadership while supporting the Trainees, including Rotational Specialty Trainee Doctors and medical students.

Attend clinics to maintain a high standard of first-class clinical service and care and ensure continuity of service.

Undertake administrative duties as required for the efficient running of the service.

About us

The Humber Health Partnership is one of the largest acute and community Partnership arrangements in the NHS, seeing well over one million patients every year and managing a budget of over £1.3 billion.

Made up of two Trusts - Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG) and Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (HUTH) - our Partnership has significant ambitions and is committed to delivering world‑class hospital and community services for the 1.65 million people we serve.

Together we employ nearly 20,000 staff. Our five main hospital sites are Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Scunthorpe General Hospital and Goole and District Hospital, for NLAG and Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital for HUTH.

As Teaching Hospitals working with the Hull York Medical School, we both lead and contribute to research in many areas - biomedical research, primary care, palliative medicine, cardiovascular and respiratory medicine, vascular surgery, cancer surgery and oncology.

We believe that by developing a diverse, inclusive, innovative, skilled and caring workforce, we can deliver excellent care to our patients and a great future for our employees, our Partnership and our community.

Job responsibilities

Although this post is suitable for a General Paediatrician with an interest in community paediatrics or neuro‑disability, other interests that complement the department will be considered. The appointee is expected to have at least 6 months of experience in community paediatrics. Completion of RCPCH SPIN module in community paediatrics or neuro‑disability is desirable. The appointee will take part in the paediatric consultant of the week rota (1 in 8), neonatal consultant of the week rota (1 in 8) and do on call (1 in 8). The appointee would be expected to undertake SUDIC work when on call and chair rapid response meetings as required by the SUDIC process.

The post would suit a good team player dedicated to high quality patient care. The opportunity exists to work in a non‑hierarchical setting and offer a wide range of paediatric duties in this busy district general hospital. The ability to match a personal special interest with service requirements will be desirable, as will the commitment to a high‑quality service in terms of clinical care, communication and team dynamics.
