We are delighted to offer a 8a Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist post based at Brent CAMHS. This post is a great opportunity to build on your experience as a senior Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist or step up to this role.

Central & North West London NHS Foundation Trust is a prominent mental health trust offering high quality children's mental health services across 5 boroughs of London. The Trust supports staff wellbeing, reflective practice and monthly team reflective groups in CAMHS teams. The contribution of child & adolescent psychotherapy as part of the MDT is valued in the Trust.

We are looking for a committed Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist with a passion for working with children, young people and their families. You will work independently and autonomously with an agreed caseload, as well as working with other psychotherapists and wider team members and/or external agencies to facilitate the best possible outcomes for children and young people. This role will allow opportunity to contribute specialist knowledge to the multi-disciplinary team and regular supervision to Band 7 CAPTs and an ACP trainee when placed within the team.

Main duties of the job

To provide an efficient, effective, comprehensive and highly specialist psychoanalytical psychotherapy assessment and treatment service for , children/adolescents with severe, highly complex and persistent mental health problems, their carers/parents and families. The post-holder will be expected to provide a high level of specialist expertise with complex and/or challenging cases that can involve a sig. level of dynamic risk (incl. trauma; neurodevelopmental needs; attachment trauma with sig. raptures; emerging PD traits, psychosis, etc.)

Work would further involve high-quality specialist psychotherapeutic assessments and therapy for CYPs and their families who are referred to us, consultation support to other professionals.

As per the team's composition: we are a developing multi-disciplinary team with a great variety of highly specialist skills and training backgrounds in psychiatry; clinical/forensic/counselling psychology; social care; family therapy and psychotherapy.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

Clinical:

  • To provide highly specialist psychotherapeutic assessments of referred children and adolescents, parents or carers to assess:-
  • The most appropriate treatment for them in co-operation with other members of the multidisciplinary service.
  • Suitability of psychotherapy including the capacity of the family and network around the child to support psychotherapy and work in partnership.
  • The state of mind of the client to provide information and insight for use in a decision-making process (State of Mind Assessments) using psychoanalytic observational methods and techniques as appropriate.
  • To formulate and devise psychotherapeutic treatment and management plans for referred clients and to provide psychotherapeutic treatment, using a range of specialist psychoanalytic methods and techniques appropriate to the service.
  • To provide highly specialist intervention with adolescent patients, particularly those who self harm.
  • To develop a service offering brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy to children and adolescents.
  • To provide reports and communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients.
  • To carry out liaison with other health and social care staff, from a range of agencies, in the care of patients with complex and enduring mental health problems.
  • Undertake work with parents/carers of referred children and adolescents.

Teaching, training, and supervision

  • To receive regular supervision from a Consultant Child Psychotherapist.
  • To provide regular supervision to a band 7 child Psychotherapist.
  • To continue to develop skills in the area of specialism developed post qualification.
  • To continue to develop further specialist skills as identified in a personal development plan.

Management, policy and service development

  • To exercise delegated authority for ensuring the provision of a range of high quality psychotherapeutically based interventions appropriate for the service area.
  • To contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of the Department of Child and Adolescent Services, operational policies and services, through the deployment of Child Psychotherapy professional skills in outcome monitoring, research from a psychodynamic perspective, service evaluation and audit

Research and service evaluation

  • To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other team members.
  • To undertake appropriate outcome research.
  • To undertake in consultation with the Consultant Child Psychotherapist project management, including audit and service evaluation, with colleagues within the Department of Child and Adolescent Services to help develop and evaluate serviceprovision.

Monitoring and Evaluation of Risk

  • To be responsible for working within the appropriate Child Protection, Deliberate Self Harm, Substance Misuse guidelines, in relation to own cases and the provision of appropriate advicein supervision and consultation. This includes reporting to and liasing appropriately with the multi-disciplinary service and external agency staff (e.g. Social Services staff, CAMHS colleagues, adult mental health staff, and hospital staff, education staff, Consultant Child &Adolescent Psychiatrist, named Child Protection Worker, Substance Misuse Worker).
  • To be responsible for continually monitoring and evaluating risk to/from children and young people in own caseload and during supervision/consultation discussions. This may be due toChild Protection concerns, Deliberate Self Harm or other risky behaviour (e.g. running away, substance misuse, causing harm to others).

Skills and Knowledge

  • To ensure the development and maintenance of the highest personal standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with the postholders professional and service manager(s) and in line with the CPD requirements of the professional body, The Association of Child Psychotherapists.
  • To contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in psychology within the service area, by exercising the skills of a reflexive and reflective practitioner, taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal and maintaining anactive engagement with current developments in the field of Child Psychotherapy and related disciplines.
  • To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic dataentry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the Association of Child Psychotherapists and Trust policies and procedures
  • To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local NHS, Social Care and Education policies and issues of relevance to the service and client group particularly child protection procedures and practices and National Service Frameworks and NICE guidelines
  • To attend team meetings as appropriate, case conferences and professional network meetings and ensure, as a part of the child psychotherapy team, that a psychodynamic understanding is articulated and acted on as appropriate.
