Our stroke consultants are expected to:

  • Provide effective and compassionate care for our Stroke patients across bed base of 48 beds
  • Develop their own area of specialist interest and provide sub-specialty expertise.
  • Develop and expand the current Stroke service locally and regionally.
  • As a core member of the West Yorkshire Associate of Acute Trusts (WYAAT), collaborate closely with the Tertiary service team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
  • Get involved in clinical research, teaching and development.
  • Provide expert advice and support regarding complex cases to clinical colleagues in primary and secondary care.

Our Elderly Care services have recently been developed to bring the teams together and improve the care of patients in our local community. Our services are currently evolving, and by joining us at this exciting time it will give you the unique opportunity to lead the development of new services across hospital and community settings. Our future plans and transformation projects include the further development of a Virtual Ward and Frailty SDEC, as well as the reconfiguration of our hospital sites.

Main duties of the job

Post holder will be providing assessment of patients suspected to have acute stroke when holding the hot phone including suitability for thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy. Post holder will be doing a TIA clinic for stroke prevention.

Postholder will be looking after patients on HASU and ASU, i.e., daily morning ward round during 1 week in 5 weeks by rotation with the other 4 Consultants. The post holder will also be responsible for ongoing rehabilitation of stroke patients in stroke rehab ward. The post holder will be following patients from TIA clinic and discharged patients from ASU and Stroke Rehab ward in a follow-up clinic once a week.

The Elderly Care medical team manages a substantive bed base of 103 acute elderly care beds. Consultants currently work in a model consisting of 2 consultants per ward which provides a consistent approach to patient care, as well as the ability to cross-cover periods of leave. In addition, there are 16 separate frailty beds on the acute medical unit at HRI. The team also covers Virtual Ward and Frailty SDEC.
