A leading rail logistics operator in the UK is seeking an ERTMS Project Engineer to lead the integration of ETCS across its locomotive fleet. This role involves overseeing fitment projects, ensuring maintenance readiness, and acting as a Subject Matter Expert on ETCS. Are you ready to lead one of the most transformative projects in UK rail? Freightliner is looking for an ERTMS Project Engineer to spearhead the integration of ETCS (European Train Control System) across our locomotive fleet. This is your chance to work on cutting-edge programmes like the East Coast Digital Programme and future ETCS route upgrades, ensuring our operations remain safe, compliant, and future-ready.
You’ll be at the heart of innovation—leading engineering activities, collaborating with industry partners, and making sure our depots and teams are ready for the next generation of rail technology.
Location: Leeds or Crewe Vehicle Maintenance Facility (with regular travel)
Lead ETCS fitment projects for Freightliner locomotives, ensuring timely delivery and compliance.
Drive maintenance readiness and training across depots.
Work with suppliers and stakeholders to solve complex engineering challenges.
Oversee design, installation, testing, and approvals for Putting into Use (PiU).
Act as a Subject Matter Expert on ETCS and high-integrity software standards.
Represent Freightliner in industry forums and working groups.
Strong engineering background with experience in rolling stock change projects.
Knowledge of traction and rolling stock systems (Class 59, 66, 70, or 90 desirable).
Familiarity with ETCS standards, approvals, and PiU responsibilities.
Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
Ability to manage complex projects under pressure and make sound decisions.
Degree or equivalent technical qualification (HNC/HND).
Experience with ETCS onboard systems and subsystems.
Knowledge of CSM-REA application and compatibility approvals.
