Overview

Research Support Officer — Fixed term, 2 years. MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK. Starting salary if offered at Band 4 £40,832 - £45,589 or Band 5 £30,911 - £35,346 per annum.

Responsibilities
  • Play a key role in the establishment of a state-of-the-art electron microscopy (EM) connectomics laboratory at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB).
  • Provide essential support in setting up and maintaining the laboratory, ensuring that all equipment, chemicals, and protocols are in place for smooth operation.
  • Coordinate the procurement and organisation of laboratory supplies.
  • Assist with sample preparation and support researchers in daily laboratory tasks.
  • Work closely with cutting-edge technologies and support innovative research in neuroscience.
Qualifications and experience
  • Background in laboratory management or technical support, preferably with experience in electron microscopy or a related field.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage laboratory supplies, protocols, and equipment efficiently.
  • Experience with sample preparation techniques, especially in a connectomics or neurobiology setting, is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team; proactive attitude towards problem-solving and supporting research.
  • A degree in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent practical experience in an EM facility is required.
Appointment and salary details

The successful applicant will be appointed, depending on experience and qualifications, at either MRC Band 5 within a salary range of £30,911 - £35,346 per annum or Band 4 within a salary range of £40,832 - £45,589 per annum. For appointment at Band 5, the successful appointment will hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in biology, biochemistry or related subject. For appointment to Band 4, the successful applicant will have a master’s degree or equivalent in biology, biochemistry or a related subject.
