Information Architect & Metadata Manager

Designing scalable structures for enterprise information discovery, metadata control, and data inventory governance

Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Information Architect & Metadata Manager to lead the design and implementation of robust information architecture frameworks across enterprise content and data assets. The role focuses on developing and managing metadata standards, building comprehensive data inventories, and improving information retrieval and findability across systems and platforms.

You will collaborate with stakeholders from IT, records management, data governance, and knowledge management to ensure structured, secure, and accessible information systems aligned with business, legal, and compliance needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and maintain enterprise information architecture , including taxonomy, ontologies, classification, and navigation systems
  • Develop consistent structures across platforms (e.g., ECMs, data lakes, digital archives, intranets) to support searchability and usability
  • Define and maintain controlled vocabularies , hierarchies, and semantic relationships to support cross-platform discoverability
  • Lead the alignment of information architecture with user experience (UX) and digital service needs
Metadata Management
  • Define and implement enterprise metadata standards and schemas (e.g., Dublin Core, DCAT, schema.org, ISO 19115)
  • Develop metadata governance policies , ensuring consistent tagging, usage, and interoperability across systems
  • Partner with data engineers and records officers to integrate metadata into information systems (e.g., MDM, DAM, CMS, DMS)
  • Support automation of metadata extraction and enrichment using NLP and AI-based classification tools
Data Inventory Design & Implementation
  • Lead the design of a centralized or federated enterprise data inventory , covering structured and unstructured data assets
  • Implement tools and processes for cataloging data assets , usage policies, ownership, and quality indicators
  • Ensure inventories and metadata support compliance, retention, access management, and data stewardship efforts
  • Promote integration of data inventories with data catalogs, governance tools, and search interfaces
Search & Retrieval Optimization
  • Improve information search and retrieval by aligning metadata, tagging, and indexing practices with user needs
  • Optimize enterprise search experiences through faceted search , synonyms, filters, and relevance tuning
  • Collaborate with developers and content managers to enhance search engine configurations (e.g., OpenSearch, SharePoint, Elastic, SolR)
  • Monitor search usage, performance, and feedback to drive continuous improvement in information accessibility
Required Qualifications
  • 6+ years experience in information architecture , metadata design , or knowledge/information management
  • Strong understanding of taxonomies, metadata schemas , and classification systems
  • Experience implementing or managing enterprise search tools , data catalogs , or metadata repositories
  • Familiarity with standards like Dublin Core, DCAT, ISO 19115, schema.org , and LOD principles
  • Proven experience designing data inventories and integrating metadata with enterprise systems
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in Information Architecture, Knowledge Management, or Metadata Governance (e.g., DAMA, ARMA, AIIM)
  • Hands-on experience with tools like Apache Atlas, Collibra, Alation, Elastic, SolR, SharePoint, or OpenMetadata
  • Experience in semantic web , linked data , and ontological modeling (e.g., RDF, OWL, SKOS)
  • Knowledge of compliance needs related to data discovery and classification (e.g., GDPR, FOIA, open data mandates)
  • Strong collaboration and documentation skills, with the ability to bridge technical and non-technical teams
