Overview

Meta builds technologies and services that enable people to connect with each other, build communities and grow businesses. These Terms of Service (the "Terms") govern your access and use of Facebook, Messenger and the other Meta Products, except where separate terms apply. These Products are provided by Meta Platforms, Inc. If you do not agree to these Terms, then do not access or use Facebook or the other products and services covered by these Terms.

These Terms (formerly known as the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities) constitute the entire agreement between you and Meta Platforms, Inc. regarding your use of our Products and supersede prior agreements. They outline how services are funded, your commitments, data usage and related policies. The Privacy Policy explains data collection and use, and you can review privacy settings within each Meta Product.

1. How our services are funded and data use

We don\u2019t charge you to use Facebook and most Meta Products unless stated otherwise. We show ads for advertisers and provide reports about ad performance. By using our Products, you agree that we can show you ads that may be relevant to you and your interests. We use your personal data to help determine which personalised ads to show you. We do not sell your personal data to advertisers, and we do not share information that directly identifies you with advertisers unless you give us permission. Advertisers can specify the audience they want to reach, and we show ads to people who may be interested. See Section 2 for more details on personalised advertising.

Our Privacy Policy explains how we collect and use your personal data to provide these services. You can review privacy choices in the settings of the relevant Meta Product.

1.5 Safety, security and integrity

We promote safety, security and integrity across our services. We employ dedicated teams, work with partners, and use technical systems to detect misuse, harmful conduct and other risks. Actions may include notifying you, removing content, restricting features, disabling an account or contacting law enforcement. We may share data across Meta Companies when necessary to keep Meta Products and users safe. Meta may access, preserve, use and share information when required or permitted by law. For more information, review our Privacy Policy. In some cases, the Oversight Board may review our decisions, subject to its terms and bylaws.

1.6 Use and develop advanced technologies

We develop and use advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and augmented reality to provide safe and functional services for everyone. This includes helping users with visual impairments understand content and building networks to improve access to the Internet. We also develop automated systems to detect and remove abusive and dangerous activity.

1.7 Research

We engage in research to develop, test and improve our Products, which includes analyzing data about how users use our Products. Our Privacy Policy explains how data is used to support this research.

1.8 Consistent experiences across Meta Products

We aim to provide a consistent and seamless experience across Meta Company Products. For example, we may use data about your interactions on Facebook to facilitate engagement on Instagram or Messenger.

1.9 Global access

To operate globally, we transfer, store and distribute content and data to data centres, partners, service providers and systems around the world, including outside your country. This infrastructure may be owned or operated by Meta Platforms, Inc., Meta Platforms Ireland Limited or its affiliates.

2. Your privacy and personalised ads

We use personal data to show personalised ads and sponsored content. We do not sell your data. You can control ad preferences and data used to determine ads through settings. Our ads explanations cover how it works and how to review settings.

3. Your commitments to Facebook and our community

We provide these services to help advance our mission. In return, you agree to the following commitments:

3.1 Who can use Facebook
  • Provide for your account the same name you use in everyday life.
  • Provide accurate information about yourself.
  • Only create one personal account and use it for personal purposes.
  • Avoid sharing passwords or transferring account access without permission.

Facebook is not available to everyone in all circumstances. You cannot use Facebook if you are under 13, a convicted sex offender, have been previously disabled for violations, or are prohibited by law from using our products.

3.2 What you can share and do on Meta Products

You may not engage in conduct that violates these Terms, the Community Standards, or other applicable terms. You may not use our products to share content that is unlawful, misleading, discriminatory or fraudulent, or that you do not own or have rights to share. You may not upload viruses, use automated data collection, or obtain data without permission. You may not misappropriate access tokens, sell data, or misuse reporting channels. You may not bypass security measures. The people and content you share may be restricted by the Platform Terms and other policies.

We can remove or restrict access to content that violates these provisions and may suspend or disable accounts for violations. If we remove content, we will explain options for review unless violations are serious or repeated or legal reasons prevent notice. More on account suspension or termination is in Section 4.2. We also work with fact-checkers to address misinformation and encourage reporting of rights violations or misuse where applicable.

3.3 Permissions you give us

You grant us certain permissions to provide our services:

  1. Your content: You retain ownership of intellectual property in content you create and share. We need a licence to use content to provide and improve our Products. This licence ends when your content is deleted from our systems.
  2. Licence to use content you create and share: By sharing content, you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide licence to host, use, distribute, modify, run, copy, display and create derivative works of your content (consistent with your privacy settings). We may store and share content with Meta Products or service providers as needed.
  3. Deleting content: You can delete content at any time. Deletion timing may vary and backups may remain for a period after deletion.
  4. Use of your name, profile picture and actions with ads: We may show your name, profile picture and actions related to ads and sponsored content to people with your permission to view them.
  5. Updates to software: If you download or use our software, we may install updates where available.
3.4 Intellectual property limits

If you use Meta-provided content, we retain rights to that content but not yours. You may use our copyrights or trademarks only as allowed, and you must obtain written permission to modify, translate, create derivative works, decompile or reverse-engineer, unless permitted by law or applicable open-source licenses.

4. Additional provisions
4.1 Updating our Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you at least 30 days before changes take effect, unless required by law. If you do not agree, you may delete your account and stop using our Products.

4.2 Account suspension or termination

We may suspend or disable your access for breaches of our Terms or Policies, including Community Standards, or for repeated copyright infringements. We may also disable accounts due to inactivity, unauthorized use, or other legal reasons. We will provide notice and review options where appropriate. If your account is disabled or terminated, these Terms may continue to apply to certain provisions.

4.3 Limits on liability

We provide our services with reasonable skill and care but cannot guarantee uninterrupted operation. We may not be liable for certain losses or damages, except where prohibited by law (e.g., death or personal injury caused by negligence). Governing law and dispute resolution details are provided, including applicable courts and jurisdictions. We reserve the right to bring claims in the country of residence as appropriate.

5. Other Terms and Policies
  • Supplemental Terms: Some products have additional terms (e.g., Commercial Terms, Music Guidelines, Avatar Terms, Meta AI Terms). If conflicting, supplemental terms govern to the extent of the conflict.
  • Severability: If any portion is unenforceable, it will be amended or severed and the remainder remains in effect.
  • No transfer: You may not transfer your rights or obligations without consent.
  • Legacy contact: You may designate a legacy contact for account memorialisation with limited disclosure rights after death or incapacity.
  • No third-party beneficiaries: These Terms do not confer rights to third parties; Meta may assign rights in connection with mergers or asset sales.
