Overview

It is acknowledged that Central Okanagan Public Schools operates within the unceded, Traditional Territory of the Okanagan syilx peoples. The School District enrolls over 25,500 students (including approximately 3,200 students who self-identify as having First Nations, Metis, and/or Inuit ancestry from Canada). Central Okanagan Public Schools is located in the Central Okanagan encompassing the communities of Peachland, West Kelowna, Kelowna, and Lake Country. There are 50 school sites with 32 Elementary Schools, 8 Middle schools, 5 Secondary Schools, 3 Learning Centres, an Alternate Education School, and an Online Learning School (6-12). We Invite Applications For The Position Of

Indigenous Education Cultural Coordinator

Under the general supervision of the Indigenous Education Vice-Principals and Director of Indigenous Education and Equity.

The Indigenous Cultural Program Coordinator Will
  • Co-ordinate a system for scheduling school/district Indigenous cultural events/presenters as well as any other Indigenous programs for schools.
  • Order and maintain current Indigenous resources materials.
  • Connect with community to ensure local traditions and protocols are upheld and local culture is represented in presentations and resources.
  • Work with Indigenous Advocates to provide cultural materials and presenters.
  • Organize, plan, set up and participate in school-based cultural events.
  • Facilitate the booking and invoicing for presentations and Elder requests.
  • Gather data on the success of the Indigenous Cultural Program and assist in preparing Equity in Action Reports for the Indigenous Education Principals and Director.
  • Support advocate learning with booking and providing cultural learning opportunities at district gatherings.
  • Maintain positive relationships with community, elders, advocates, administration, and teachers in order to bring culture into schools.
  • Demonstrate a growth mindset and a willingness to continue learning about culture and protocol in order to grow our capacity as a department.
The Successful Candidate Will Possess The Following Qualifications
  • Grade 12 plus 2 years of post-secondary education in culturally relevant courses.
  • Minimum of 2 years' previous related experience.
  • Thorough understanding of the Indigenous Culture and history with awareness of cultural protocols.
  • Demonstrated experience working with the Indigenous community, Indigenous students and their parents.
  • Ability to model cultural teachings.
  • Experience working with budgets.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience with software products.
  • Respectful understanding of Okanagan protocols and teachings.
The successful applicant will be expected to:
  • Collaborate well with all members of the Indigenous Education Team.
  • Demonstrate an ability to speak to a diverse group of learners.
  • Speak to a large group of students and/or advocates to share cultural understandings and/or facilitate events.
  • Complete the required District's Health and Safety training.

Preference will be given to Indigenous applicants of Métis, First Nations and Inuit ancestral descent who can demonstrate knowledge of, and commitment to, Indigenous culture and ancestry.

This is a permanent full-time 10-month position starting as soon as possible working 35 hours per week at a wage rate of $34.54 per hour plus a comprehensive employee benefit package including extended health and dental coverage, short-term and long-term disability insurance and participation in a defined benefit pension plan.
