Learning Assistant – Manachaban Middle School

This continuing, full-time Learning Assistant position starts immediately at Manachaban Middle School and reports to the Principal. Manachaban Middle School serves French Immersion and English students in grades 5–8 and is located in Cochrane.
Responsibilities
- Provide assistance to students as identified in individualized plans, including those requiring additional supports such as personal, medical care, and safety needs.
- Implement and reinforce strategies as directed by teachers and identified in student plans (PLP, IPP, BSP, safety plans, medical plans).
- Record observations and data on behavioral challenges to support positive behavior strategies.
- Participate in collaborative planning meetings for IPPs or SSPs as requested.
- Assist in preparing individualized program materials under the direction of classroom or student support teachers.
- Actively promote student learning and independence and facilitate interaction among students with special needs and peers.
- Respect confidentiality and privacy of students and personnel information.
- Support routine personal care activities and assist with mobility, personal care, and related needs as directed.
- Assist with physical education and motor skills development as directed by a specialist and monitored by a teacher.
- Support students’ medical needs as directed, including transfers, feeding, oxygen, catheterization, medication administration, and other routine medical requirements.
Education / Experience
- Educational Assistant Certificate or a related diploma / certificate.
- Training in preventative / de-escalation behavior, or willingness to become certified.
- Minimum one year of experience working with students with challenging behavior and applying positive behavior supports is an asset.
- CPR / First Aid Certification or willingness to become certified is an asset.
- Equivalent combinations of Education and Experience may be considered.
Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to handle complex and sensitive issues professionally and timely.
- Ability to carry out plans and directions of teaching staff to assist students.
- Ability to build rapport with students and staff; adapt to dynamic situations and manage stress effectively.
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work in team settings.
- Excellent multi-tasking, prioritization and problem-solving abilities.
- Understanding of child development and strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and web-based applications.
