Job Description

The Senior Student Success Advisor—Wellbeing will have a strong background in su pporting international student wellness . This individual will play a key role in assessing and responding to situations that may impact a studen t’s academic or personal success , as well as the broader campus community. The ideal candidate brings ex perience in delivering trauma-informed care, student advising, training and certifications in mental health and suicide intervention, an unwavering commitment to inclusion, student-focused service, and the ability to support a high-performing, collaborative team culture. This is an exciting opportunity to shape a first-of-its-kind program in Canada from the ground up.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Student Success Supervisor, the Senior Student Success Advisor - Wellbeing offers supportive listening, initial risk/needs screening,short-term case coordination, and warm referrals to campus partners and community services. A primary component of this role will be developing procedures and processes related to supporting at-risk students, ensuring alignment with existing Kaplan and University of Alberta policies. They will also liaise with various teams at the Universi ty of Alberta to advocate for students and coordinate access to services.

The Senior Student Success Advisor will deliver high-quality advising and guidance on topics such as academic standing, degree progression, program changes, and other academic and non-academic topics. They will also lead the coordination of programs and events that foster well-being, engagement, belonging, and academic success. Supervision of student peer mentors may also be required.

We welcome candidates from a wide range of sectors who can demonstrate transferable experience, particularly in social programming, student advising, and intercultural or international student support.

Main Responsibilities
  • Support at-risk students by providing a supportive environment, trauma-informed care, and resource navigation.

  • Provide short-term case coordination to reduce barriers (e.g., appointment facilitation, documentation guidance, and follow-up check-ins) until a student is connected with the appropriate service.

  • Advise prospective, new, and continuing students on program-related matters such as academic standing, degree progression, and program changes.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with University of Alberta faculty, staff, and service departments to assist students to access support and enhance the student experience.

  • Develop and apply procedures and processes related to identification and support of at-risk students, ensuring alignment with applicable University of Alberta policies, as well as Kaplan’s Safeguarding, Health and Safety, and EDI practices.

  • Coordinate, design, and deliver inclusive wellbeing programming and events that foster a sense of belonging, cultural connection, and community among international students.

  • Respond to student inquiries through a flexible, personalised and inclusive approach, maintaining confidentiality as appropriate.

  • Support the day-to-day delivery of student support services across wellness, academic advising, and settlement/transition support.

  • Ensure that all student-related data and documentation are accurate and kept up to date to support operational and reporting needs.

What you bring to the Role
  • University degree in related field and at least 3-5 years of experience working in an advising or mental health-related field are required, particularly with international students or newcomers to Canada.

  • Extensive knowledge of student-centred, culturally responsive and trauma-informed care; gender-based and sexual violence prevention; and suicide intervention.

  • A strong background in student advising, wellbeing programming, student engagement, and event coordination within an educational or community setting.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication and relationship-building skills. Preference will be given to individuals who are fluent in Mandarin.

  • 1-2 years of experience supporting international students, student life, and working in a cross-cultural environment.

  • Proven ability to assess complex situations, exercise sound judgment, and manage multiple priorities in time-sensitive contexts. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, and legislation (Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policy, Student Conduct Policy, Helping Individuals At Risk Policy, Discrimination, Harassment, Duty to Accommodate Policy, Residence Community Standards, UAPPOL, and Protection of Privacy Act (POPA)).

  • Able to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently on projects.

  • A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in both practice and values.

Year One Foundation Program

The University of Alberta’s Foundation Program is an innovative joint educational partnership between Kaplan International Pathways Canada and the University of Alberta, launching in 2025. The University of Alberta is a Top 100 world-ranking institution located in Edmonton, Alberta. This new Foundation Program provides international students who do not meet direct entry requirements with a pathway to full undergraduate admission. Students complete a three-term (one academic year) program that includes ten 3-credit university-level courses counting toward the first complete year of a Bachelor’s degree, alongside non-credit academic and skill-building classes designed to prepare them for long-term success.

Students are University of Alberta students from day one. Kaplan International Pathways supports them through operational management, supplemental instruction, well-being services, and co-curricular programming. Academic instruction is delivered by University faculty.
