Job description

Youth Climate Action

Organization: Youth Climate Corps BC

Location: Kelowna, BC

Closing Date for Applications: August 6, 2025

Job Title: Program Coordinator, Kelowna

Reports to: Program Lead, Kelowna

Location: Onsite and Home office

Position Status: 35 hr/weekly, 18-week contract starting on or around September 29, 2025

Wage: $28.01/hr plus 4% vacation pay

Position Overview: In partnership with the City of Kelowna, YCCBC is seeking a Program Coordinator to lead a team of passionate Community Climate Action Mobilizers in advancing local climate action and community resilience. As a local government, the City is uniquely positioned to influence how the community grows, commutes, interacts, and protects natural ecosystems, all in a low-emission and climate-resilient manner. This program is designed to support these efforts through outreach, education, and community engagement.

In alignment with YCCBC’s values, the Program Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day supervision and mentorship of the Community Climate Action Mobilizers. Working primarily on-site, the Coordinator ensures effective implementation of program logistics, provides direct support to Mobilizers, and fosters a safe, inclusive, and empowering work environment.

This role collaborates closely with the YCCBC Program Lead, the City of Kelowna, and surrounding communities to develop and oversee a portfolio of meaningful projects. These projects will support key climate initiatives, including assisting in creating an in-person and digital communications plan as well as attending community events to educate the public about climate action.

By combining leadership, communication, and climate literacy, the Program Coordinator will play a pivotal role in guiding the Mobilizer team to make a tangible, positive impact in the region.

About Youth Climate Corps BC: Youth Climate Corps BC (YCCBC) empowers young people to take meaningful action against the climate crisis. Through paid work and hands-on training, YCCBC equips youth with the skills to implement climate action projects that directly benefit their communities. By reducing emissions, building resilience, and fostering adaptation, YCCBC ensures real impact at the local level.

YCCBC strengthens community capacity by developing a motivated, organized, and adaptable youth workforce to bring climate plans to life. Participants aged 17-30 collaborate for four to six months, gaining essential skills, scaling up climate initiatives, and growing their leadership and community networks.

Leadership

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Supervise, support, and inspire a team of up to four Mobilizers by providing ongoing coaching, mentorship, and regular constructive performance feedback.
  • Foster professional growth by facilitating career skill-building and leadership development opportunities for Mobilizer team members.

On-Site Operations

  • Dedicate 80% of work hours to on-site engagement, actively guiding and supporting team members in daily project activities.
  • Serve as the primary on-site liaison with project partners, ensuring smooth collaboration and efficient problem-solving, escalating issues to the Program Lead when necessary.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with the Program Lead to provide project updates and address emerging challenges.
  • Maintain communication with the YCCBC Program Director and other YCCBC staff to ensure alignment with program goals and expectations.
  • Work alongside the YCCBC Communications Team to enhance outreach efforts through social media and other media platforms.

Health And Safety

  • Maintain and promote a safe working environment by enforcing WorkSafeBC standards and organizational protocols.
  • Identify potential hazards, implement corrective actions, and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Cultivate a team culture that prioritizes safety, inclusion, and mutual respect.

Coordination And Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Program Lead and external partners to effectively plan and coordinate job site activities.
  • Clearly communicate daily tasks and project objectives to team members, ensuring clarity and direction.
  • Monitor project progress, proactively addressing challenges to keep initiatives on track and aligned with timelines.

Administrative Duties

  • Dedicate 20% of work hours to administrative tasks, including maintaining accurate reports and coordinating communication with the Program Lead.
  • Efficiently allocate resources, manage budgets, and document program milestones.
  • Ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC and YCCBC operational standards.
  • Support promotional efforts by collaborating with the YCCBC Communications Team to highlight program successes and community impact.

Qualifications

No ‘formal’ post-secondary education is required, as we recognize that ‘formal’ education at colleges and universities is just one version of many types of meaningful education.

  • Must be between 17 and 30 years old and reside in the Kelowna area.
  • Personal values and commitment to climate action, social justice, anti-racism / anti-oppression, diversity, inclusion, reconciliation and decolonization.
  • Awareness of one's own lived experience of systemic barriers or privilege, and how that shapes your unique contribution to strategic social change.
  • Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends, to accommodate projects that may take place outside of regular business hours.
  • The legal authority to work in Canada.
  • A criminal record check may be required.
  • Physical ability that allows for extended periods of standing, walking, moving supplies or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds, and tasks that involve bending or stooping.

Experience, Skills, And Attributes

  • Curiosity to explore many kinds of work that support community climate action.
  • Experience supervising a team including providing direction and constructive feedback.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices, including WorkSafeBC standards.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects, and prioritize key tasks to meet time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Financial management, administrative, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of and work experience in climate change, anti-oppression work, and related fields such as food security, energy, forestry, and climate justice.
