Position Overview

Under the direct supervision of the Safety Coordinator & Biosafety Officer, and general supervision of the Manager, Occupational Health & Safety, and while demonstrating a commitment to the Mission, Values and Management Philosophy of St. Boniface Hospital, the SAFETY ADVISOR is responsible for working in collaboration with the Safety Coordinator in the delivery of the workplace safety program to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the patients, visitors and employees of St. Boniface Hospital and the Research Enterprise.

Core Responsibilities & Duties
  • Supports the implementation and maintenance of the Hospital and Research Enterprise safety program in compliance with all applicable legislation such as the Workplace Safety and Health Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, Canadian Standards Association, and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, etc.
  • Oversees the development, implementation and maintenance of the Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) program, including creation of JHA’s and associated policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the development, implementation and maintenance of the Workplace Safety Inspection program, including reviewing, logging, enforcing and responding to submitted safety inspections.
  • Oversees the development, implementation and maintenance of the Construction, Renovation and Maintenance Safety Program, including safety plan development for projects, monitoring, and supporting construction-related activities.
  • Coordinates accident and incidents investigations, including data analysis, corrective action recommendations and follow up.
  • Delivers safety education, training and awareness programs using the Train-the-Training approach and maintains training records.
  • Participate in new employee safety orientations.
  • Participates in the Safety Awareness Campaign, including Safety Newsletters and Safety Alerts.
  • Supports additional programs such as Chemical Safety, Respirator Fit Testing, Emergency Eyewash/Shower, etc.
  • Supports the Hearing Conservation program by working with team members to develop the biennial hearing conservation reports.
  • Acts as a Team Leader during Code Brown (chemical spill) emergencies.
  • Acts as the Asbestos Program Officer Delegate, overseeing the Asbestos Management Program.
  • Complies with all health and safety policies, regulation and safety work procedures & practices.
  • Liaises with Workplace Safety & Health associations and authorities as required.
  • Maintains current knowledge of relevant safety legislation, standards and best practices.
  • Provides backup support to the Safety Coordinator and Health & Safety Assistant during absences.
  • Participates in safety initiatives across Catholic Health Network facilities under the Shared Services Occupational Health agreement.
Experience
  • Three (3) years’ experience in Occupational Health and Safety or related experience, preferably in a health care environment.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in Construction-related safety is an asset.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Registration as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or similar designation.
Special Training
  • Train-the-Trainer certification is an asset.
  • Safety program auditor certification is an asset.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • First aid certificate required.
