Issues in Canadian Health Policy

Compensation

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds.

· Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $20.81 per hour. (Rate effective January 1, 2023)

· Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $32.74 per hour. (Rate effective January 1, 2023)

· In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.

Duties

The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in Health Sciences or related discipline.

  • If vacancies remain, fourth year (honours) standing students in Health Sciences or related discipline will be considered.

  • Applicants must have completed this course within the last three years.

  • Experience leading seminars is an asset.

  • The successful applicant must have effective communication skills including the ability to explain subject material to students and provide constructive feedback, be punctual in attending classes, and be able to meet appropriate deadlines.

  • Experience or training with synchronous and asynchronous course support

  • Proficiency with online delivery tools (e.g., Lifesize, Microsoft Teams, Brightspace)

  • Available online or in person to provide feedback
