Position Summary
The Senior Accounting Officer will coordinate and participate in day-to-day accounting and financial processes for NACCA and its group of companies. They will also participate in monthly bank and investment reconciliations, annual audit requirements, and support other financial and accounting duties while contributing to the continuous improvement of the accounting policies, processes, and controls, ensuring compliance across the organization. This role will additionally provide financial and economic advice and analysis on current and new business opportunities and facilitate a positive team environment.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting
- Plan, set up, and administer accounting systems and prepare financial information.
- Complete balance sheet reconciliations and assist with the preparation of financial statements and accompanying analysis.
- Manage prepaid, accruals, bank reconciliations and fixed asset registry.
- Assist with budget preparation and monitoring.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations and journal entries of various GL accounts.
- Participate in the year-end process, the preparation of financial statements, and the notes to financial statements.
- Increase productivity by developing automated reporting/forecasting tools.
Management Accounting
- Process documentation.
- Maintain accounting controls by preparing and recommending best practices, policies, and procedures.
- Analyze data collected to determine the state of the organization's financial health.
- Assist the finance team with financial statement preparation, reports, and analysis of key performance indicators for the Senior Management, Board of Directors, and Board Committees.
- Contract management and reporting.
- Review and approval of expenses submitted by employees.
- HST tax reasonability and filing.
- Assist in the analysis and implementation of new accounting standards, as required.
- Assist with the preparation and review of business cases.
- Maintain a positive working relationship with programs teams to ensure alignment of processes and program financial data.
Audits
- Participate in the year-end external audit via preparation of reports and financial analysis.
- Respond to external auditor ad hoc queries.
Information Systems
- Review, maintain, and align internal controls, processes, and systems.
- Support the development and implementation of improvements to forms, technology, and processes used to collect financial data.
- Examine the proficiency of the software programs used to organize data.
- Support the development of reporting framework to managers and programs.
Payroll
- Maintain internal controls, processes, and systems related to payroll payments per policies approved by the Board.
- Oversee timely, accurate payroll, update records, and ensure employee data security.
- Work with the human resources team on benefits, pensions, deductions, and employee inquiries.
- Maintain positive working relationship with payroll service provider.
- Analyze payroll costs and generate files for general ledger posting.
Other
- Support NACCA related entities on shared services, ensuring that conflict of interest guidelines are adhered to.
- Demonstrates discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
- May be requested to undertake other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education
- Completion of a University Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Commerce, or Finance is required.
- Currently working toward completion of CPA designation or completion of CPA designation in good standing is considered an asset.
- While a post-secondary education is preferred, candidates with a combination of relevant experience and education may also be considered.
Experience
- Minimum 6 years of experience in finance or accounting.
- Experience working with accounting software, preferably Ceridian and Sage 3000.
- Proven experience with Microsoft Excel, specifically pivot tables, data tables, advanced functions, and data models.
- Prior experience working with Indigenous communities and/or organization is preferred.
Abilities, Knowledge & Skills
- Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting theories, principles, methods, practices, and terminology.
- Knowledge of the application of data processing and terminology as it applies to maintaining financial control and accounting records.
- Knowledge of techniques commonly used in locating errors in accounting records.
- Strong understanding of cost accounting and cost funding procedures.
- Ability to interpret and analyze (non-profit) financial statements.
