Overview

Wawanesa is hiring multiple Actuaries to join our Advanced Analytics team - a collaborative group of specialists in actuarial science, data science, and engineering. This is a unique opportunity to apply your actuarial skills in a modern, data-driven environment. You’ll work closely with teams across the organization including pricing, reserving, claims, and underwriting to solve diverse business problems using advanced techniques such as machine learning and large language models. This team builds and deploys predictive models that support decision-making across the enterprise, helping Wawanesa deliver smarter, faster, and more impactful solutions.

These roles are open to candidates at multiple levels of actuarial development including: Senior Actuarial Analyst, Actuarial Consultant, and Senior Actuarial Consultant.

Working Language: English (This role is considered a head-office role and will be required to communicate with internal stakeholders across Canada where the primary business language utilized is English.)

Salary: The salary offered for this role is determined with consideration to various factors, including location, market conditions, internal pay equity and the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience and anticipated proficiency in the role. The salary range is estimated to be $95,000 - $140,000. Candidates with salary expectations outside of the range are still encouraged to apply. In addition to salary, permanent employees are eligible for an annual bonus plan, leave top-up programs and generous vacation time, personal days, premium-free benefits and pension plan.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders throughout the organization to design, develop, and assess experiments aimed at uncovering meaningful and actionable insights to solve challenging business problems
  • Execute and document each stage of the analytical process including sourcing and validating data, performing data cleaning and transformation, selecting appropriate modeling techniques, and interpreting results in the context of business objectives
  • Communicate insights and findings clearly to a broad range of stakeholders, both technical and non-technical, by tailoring messaging to suit the audience and support informed decision-making
  • Improve upon and ensure adherence to established practices, processes and guidelines
  • Keep up to date on current statistical and mathematical models and methodologies, including predictive modelling and machine learning with an eye for applying this knowledge to business processes
  • Contribute to educational initiatives aimed at the development of overall inter- and intra-departmental knowledge
  • Mentor other actuarial analysts and contribute to a culture of continual learning and improvement
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • University degree in Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics or other related field of study
  • Pursuing ACAS or FCAS designation
  • Minimum of 3 years prior work experience in insurance or related field
  • Detail oriented with analytical and problem-solving skills and an ability to recognize and identify issues and take proper action to resolve them
  • Strong creativity skills, with the ability to develop solutions to a variety of problems
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner with style fitting for the audience and message
  • Strong planning and organizing skills, with the ability to develop and implement plans by prioritizing
  • Proven ability to collaborate and mentor a multi-disciplinary team
  • Proficiency with analytical tools and processes used within the department considered an asset. For example: SQL, Python, cloud platforms (AWS), version control, coding standards etc.
