The Role
- The Cost Engineer role is primarily responsible for analyzing the project estimate, liaising with other functions where necessary to agree on the estimate breakdown and preparing a budget for the project that complies with reporting/project control requirements.
- Ensure that the business risks are reduced to a minimum and that costs and value are forecasted and reported correctly.
- Supporting the relevant regions and business line leadership in providing cost forecasting and reporting.
Main Responsibilities & Key Result Areas
- Prepare and/or implement EnerMech and Client cost control procedures and associated cost coding.
- Phase the project estimate in line with the Construction Plan across the durations of each phase of the job.
- Ensure manhours and related costs are recorded and coded correctly and that timesheet submissions are made as required in order to support cash flow.
- Prepare cost, manhour, and cash forecasts based on updated progress, forecasts, and trends.
- Maintain Cost History sheets for every major area of the project.
- Prepare project cost and manhour reports in a timely fashion reflecting the current forecasts and trends complete with narratives and explanations for variances.
- Review continuously the current costs of all construction activities against budget and be aware of trends caused by changes to work scope.
- Control variations to work scope and support with an estimate of total costs of variations including manhours and manhour associated costs, additional equipment, materials, etc.
- Liaise with planners to ascertain and agree on construction progress and thus future invoice values.
- Carry out analysis of trends and highlight potential problems with recommendations for remedial action on an "Early Warning" basis.
- Prepare ad hoc cost studies and estimates as required.
- Contribute to building a cost-conscious attitude throughout the construction team.
- Carry out additional tasks as may be required from time to time.
- Be aware of and identify potential back charges from Clients/subcontractors.
- Liaise with the Project Accountant with regard to the contract's actual rates and associated cost data.
- Possess a significant degree of expertise in all aspects of Cost Control.
Desired Candidate Profile
- Minimum HNC/HND in Business Management, Quantity Surveying, or Law or similar.
- Experience in a cost-per-project controls role or an engineering discipline function involved in producing cost estimates or proposals.
- Commercial and contractual diligence.
Preferred:
- Project Management and delivery vs deadlines.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills.
