Purpose of Job
  • To ensure that the Sasol Mining operations execute and deliver safe production in line with strategic mine plans and the broader Mining strategy. The Vice President Collieries directs safe operations, ensuring that operations are profitable and sustainable in the long-term.
  • Responsible for the operational positioning of the assets and the value chain to build a capable and resilient integrated operation that can deliver with predictability in line with business needs and constraints (whole system view).
  • Ensures continuous improvement and business transformation and roll out complex wide improvement initiatives.
  • Leads, directs and manages the operational, strategic, and business objectives of the operations while adhering to all legislative requirements.
  • Ensures and reports on safe and reliable and sustainable mining operations.
  • To ensure that the Sasol Mining operations deliver on their business KPIs.
Key Accountabilities

Deliver high quality asset management strategies ensuring sustained operations and leading the development and monitoring of continuous improvement targets.

  • Oversee all aspects of the Mining collieries, ensuring mine planning and scheduling (including understanding ore body) optimises long term mine health across the Sasol Mining complex, builds in flexibility and minimises risks.
  • Set and monitor production targets for the Sasol Mining complex and manage production operations to deliver volumes at optimal productivity and cost in normal time.
  • Ensures that best practices are implemented and stardardised across the Sasol Mining complex.
  • Fully accountable for profit & loss performance of the Sasol Mining collieries
  • Ensure execution of engineering and maintenance that optimise asset management strategies and total cost of ownership.
  • Ensures continuous improvement and business transformation and roll out complex wide improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure best in class SHE performance and continuous improvement of key SHE metrics.Control operating cost to ensure production volumes are achieved within budget.
  • Manage interaction with internal and external stakeholders including unions, communities, local government and government bodies like Department of Mineral Resources and Petroleum
  • and all other relevant industry bodies to ensure ongoing and compliant mining production.
  • Apply evidence-based SHE practices, in alignment with set standards, to ensure safe operations and manage occupational health, ensuring that environmental standards are adhered to as well as playing a role in the reduction of Sasol's GHG footprint.
  • Ensure the provision of technical services, equipment maintenance as well as the implementation of good practices for optimisation of efficient and effective operations, and production, in order to achieve set cost, volume and quality targets (interfacing with the Asset Services and Operations Improvement portfolios).
  • Drive safe and reliable operations through the appropriate management of assets (equipment refurbishment and replacement, geographical expansion, maintenance etc.) in order to maintain the long-term sustainability of the Secunda operations.
  • Ensure effective mining rights management as per legislative requirements (e.g. Mining Charter) across the complex.
  • Ensure the effective implementation of Sasol's risk philosophy and enterprise risk.
  • Legally appointed under Section 2A (2) of the Mine, Health & Safety Act and is responsible and accountable for the duties set out in the legal appointment letter.
Formal Education
  • Relevant University Degree / B Tech
  • A Post graduate Management qualification will be preferred
