Unlock Your Potential! We’re looking for a passionate VESSEL ENGINEER SUPERINTENDENT to join our I&J in the Waterfront, Cape Town. The main purpose of this job is the overall technical oversight of vessels under your command. This includes overseeing and managing vessel engineers who, under this report, are responsible for the daily operations of maintenance and repairs, survey schedules and general assessment of vessels, inspections and vessel repair outages.

Key Areas of Impact

Vessel Management

  • Oversee maintenance and repairs, budgeting, survey schedules, on-board general assessment of vessels, inspections and vessel outages.
  • Ensure the vessels are technically operational.
  • Liase with vessel shore engineers, contractors and workshops on technical and operational matters including vessel performance.
  • Attend to vessel turn around outages, assist with dry docking, repairs and survey when required and determine repair specifications for outages and maintenance.
  • Provide and compile documented reports upon completion of outage, including summaries of work performed, operational budgets, and actual expenditure.
  • Identify and source for technical and operational partners to enhance the marine engineering business.
  • Ensure that all copies of statutory and equipment certificates are properly maintained and documented.
  • Provide technical assistance and advice vessel and to shore-based engineers.
  • Sail on vessels every quarter for assessment and understanding of any mechanical systems found on board vessels.
  • Submit a report of all findings during the at-sea assessment.
  • Attend and sail on all vessel trials after any work has been completed during any outages or as required.
  • Perform evaluation for outage works, repair quotes and selection of service providers for repair works, ship maintenance etc.
  • Perform monthly and daily reviews of ship logs and vessel performance data on Praxis fleet management system and attend to vessel inspections.
  • Monitor technical status of the vessels with relation to class certification and surveys.
  • Supervise contractors and workshops repair and maintenance of the vessels.
  • Perform budgeting and cost control measures on ship spares and outage requirements.
  • Perform technical compliance audits and investigate on defects or failures on a regular scheduled basis to ensure conformance.
  • Work with the Planning Management team to ensure smooth and successful implementation of QHSE systems and policies.
  • Attend all required operation meetings.
  • Compile all business cases for future vessel projects or outages.
Standards, Policies and Safety
  • Perform systematic review of recommended codes, guidelines and standards and ensure compliance with Class, SAMSA and OC standards.
  • Ensure and maintain vessels zero loss time accident record and to report all vessel incidents, near misses to prevent and eliminate potential incidents.
  • Ensure compliance to company’s Health and Safety policies and OSHACT.
Material and Quotation Approval and Requirements
  • Liaise with external parties for any vessel material required for ongoing projects
  • Submit quotations to the Procurement staff for purchase orders and payments
  • Track and report all quotations on a monthly basis to the Marine Technical Manager
Supervision of Staff
  • Supervising the maintenance & repair of fishing vessels and quayside maintenance.
  • Prioritizing on plan of action regarding maintenance and repairs to be undertaken.
  • Report any defects & repairs to the Marine Technical Manager.
  • Ensuring that scheduled maintenance and repair work is carried out in the turnaround period with a minimum of overtime.
  • Ensure safe work environment at all times
  • Liaise with Skipper, Chief and VMT with regards to all maintenance and repair work on the vessels
  • Maintain a good working relationship between Engineering Shore staff, Seagoing Engineers and Skippers to promote greater cooperation, efficiency and motivation.
  • Complete performance management reports to be utilized at the Company’s IPA Goal setting, and rated scores for increases.
  • Provide input for Seagoing Engineering crew who reflects potential for growth and development.
  • Provide mentorship and training to all learners and Cadets within the company.
What It Takes to Succeed

Experience that set you up for success:

  • Minimum 5-8 years in a similar role supervising minimum 3 sea going fishing vessels
  • Technical expertise and management skills in the coordination of multiple jobs with complex scope, schedule, quality and management objectives in jobs involving the planning, design, construction, qualification, maintenance and alteration systems
  • Experienced planning, organizing, and coordination of contractors, shore engineers and internal onsite workshops

Qualifications & Certifications that will contribute to your success:

  • A Mechanical or Hydraulic Engineering Degree or Diploma or equivalent is required
  • The ideal candidate can also hold a Marine Chief Engineer Fishing qualification over 2000kw with Class 4 to be considered
Additional Requirements that will enhance your impact for success
  • Required to travel to sites and own transport as well as sail on vessels when required.
  • Valid Driver’s License
