Background:

Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (WHC) is a wholly‑owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition WHC offers a range of products and services to Academics.

Main purpose of the job:

Experience of conducting 2D and 3D ultrasound with doppler where relevant in adults and children including ultrasound of the heart carotid kidneys and conducting fetal ultrasound during pregnancy including assessment of uterine and umbilical artery blood flow.

Location:

DPHRU - Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital Soweto.

Key performance areas:
  • Perform high‑quality fetal ultrasound scans following clinical protocols.
  • Assess fetal development anatomy and detect abnormalities.
  • Ensure correct positioning of the patient for optimal imaging.
  • Operate and adjust ultrasound machines to optimize image quality.
  • Perform routine maintenance and report equipment issues.
  • Stay updated on the latest ultrasound technology and techniques.
  • Capture and analyze high‑quality images for research data collection and screening purposes.
  • Provide preliminary findings to the study leads and complete referrals were relevant.
  • Accurately document scan results on REDCAP.
  • Follow professional guidelines infection control and radiation safety standards.
  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self‑management.
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback.
  • Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in on‑going training and development activities such as workshops, forums, conferences etc.
  • Apply knowledge of the organisational systems structures policies and procedures to achieve results.
  • Provide appropriate resolution for tasks or deadlines not met.
  • Support and drive the organisations core values.
  • Experience of conducting 2D and 3D ultrasound with doppler where relevant in adults and children including ultrasound of the heart carotid kidneys and conducting fetal ultrasound during pregnancy including assessment of uterine and umbilical artery blood flow.
  • Must be able to interpret images and generate reports capturing data and images into an electronic data capture system.
  • Must be able to conduct all ultrasound assessments including doppler measures and be willing to train and supervise junior sonography trainees including implementing quality control and quality assurance measures for all imaging conducted.
  • Confidentiality, tact and discretion must be maintained at all times.
  • Ability to manage self and prioritise own workload. Self‑motivated able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organisational communication and problem solving skills. Able to support the research team to deliver the project goals on time and on budget.
  • Teaching and supervision experience would be desirable.
Required minimum education and training:
  • Grade 12
  • Trained and Registered Sonographer
  • GCP
  • Driver's licence and able to drive a manual vehicle
Professional Body Registration:
  • Must be registered in ultrasonography with the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA)
Required minimum work experience:
  • At least 2 - 3 years experience working as a Sonographer
Desirable additional education work experience and personal abilities:
  • Must possess strong organisational skills.
  • Interested in community engagement.
  • Ability to work and handle infants and young children.
  • Ability to manage emotionally triggering interviews.
  • Ability to follow SOP and accuracy and precision of data collection.
  • Ability to multi‑task.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Must be able to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work in a complex and demanding environment.
