An opportunity for an experienced Scrapyard Supervisor is available for permanent employment based in Cape Town.

Salary: Negotiable from R30 000 kpm based on experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Scrapyard Operations Management
  • Organise, plan and supervise daily scrapyard activities.
  • Ensure all scrap is sorted, categorised and stored correctly according to plant requirements.
  • Oversee receiving, off‑loading, weighing and dispatch of scrap materials.
  • Monitor scrap stock levels and ensure consistent supply to production processes.
Sorting & Classification of Scrap
  • Identify and separate ferrous vs non‑ferrous metals.
  • Sort scrap according to grade, size, quality, contamination levels and melting suitability.
  • Ensure removal of hazardous or non‑conforming materials (e.g., sealed cylinders, flammables, foreign objects).
  • Verify scrap consistency and communicate anomalies to management.
Team Leadership & Supervision
  • Lead and coordinate scrapyard labourers, operators and support staff.
  • Allocate tasks, monitor productivity, and ensure high workmanship standards.
  • Conduct toolbox talks, shift briefings and safety discussions.
  • Train employees on scrap identification, safety protocols, and handling procedures.
Health, Safety & Compliance
  • Enforce strict adherence to safety procedures in a high‑risk environment.
  • Ensure proper PPE usage and compliance with the OHS Act and company safety policies.
  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard identification for scrap‑handling tasks.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and hazard‑free scrapyard area.
Equipment & Material Handling
  • Oversee operation of cranes, loaders, grabbers, magnets and other scrapyard equipment (where applicable).
  • Ensure daily equipment checks, reporting of defects and adherence to maintenance schedules.
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure uninterrupted yard operations.
Administration & Reporting
  • Keep accurate records of scrap received, sorted and dispatched.
  • Submit daily/weekly reports on scrap volumes, grades and discrepancies.
  • Assist with stock‑takes, audits and inventory control processes.
Efficiency & Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve scrap flow, reduce contamination and optimise yard layout.
  • Recommend improvements in sorting processes or equipment utilisation.
  • Support production by ensuring consistent, well‑prepared scrap feedstock.
Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working in the steel industry, scrapyard operations, or furnace feed preparation.
  • Strong background in scrap sorting, categorisation, identification and grading.
  • Knowledge of ferrous and non‑ferrous metals, including their value, melting characteristics and processing requirements.
  • Experience supervising teams in a heavy industrial or high‑risk environment.
  • Grade 12 (essential)
  • Scrap classification training or metallurgical exposure (adv)
  • Supervisory or leadership training (adv)
  • Valid driver’s licence or ability to operate material handling equipment (adv)
  • Must be willing and ready to relocate to Cape Town (relocation support provided).
  • Ability to work in outdoor, high‑risk and high‑volume scrap‑handling environments.
