Job description
Registered Nurse - SICU Qualified x2

Location: Intensive Care Unit at Life Peglerae Hospital. Reporting to ICU Unit Manager – Christine Kholungoane. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring delivery of uncompromising quality care in line with company strategic objectives and applicable health and nursing legislation.

Critical Outputs

To provide quality patient care by:

  • Reviewing and complying with internal policies and protocols
  • Ensuring quality management systems and initiatives are conducted according to the unit specification
  • Advocating for the patient by motivating acuity to the case management and notifying the doctor of any limitations

Providing effective people management by

  • Interacting and communicating with a multi‑disciplinary team
  • Providing training and development to ensure personal and professional growth
  • Ensuring the ICU team works according to the scope of practice to utilize the correct skills mix

Providing effective cost management by

  • Managing all stock used according to unit specific policies and protocols
  • Controlling and managing staff hours and leave in accordance with company policy

Providing effective infection control and SHEQ by

  • Maintaining a safe and holistic patient environment and enforcing infection control
  • Promoting a safe and healthy working environment by completing SHEQ alerts and incident reports to the SHEQ Coordinator

Ensuring effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders by

  • Conducting in‑service orientation on doctor specific preferences
  • Executing doctor’s requests and prescriptions after patient rounds
  • Assisting multidisciplinary team members with the execution of their duties

Ensuring effective functioning of equipment and instrumentation

  • Checking equipment and instrumentation are in working condition daily and reporting any defaults to the Unit Manager and Clinical Engineer
  • Providing quality basic and specialised nursing care
  • Continually communicating with the patient and family regarding the patient’s condition
  • Administering medication in accordance with ethical and legal frameworks
  • Educating and supervising staff and doctors on correct utilisation of specialised equipment and instrumentation

Ensuring effective record keeping by

  • Ensuring records are accurately completed and stored in accordance with legal and ethical requirements
Requirements
  • Degree in Nursing and Midwifery
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Intensive Care Nursing
  • Experience and training in an ICU setting is essential
  • Must be able to function independently as well as interdependently
  • Registered with SANC; all qualifications to be registered
  • Strong customer orientation, team player, very energetic and well organised
  • Must be able to work under pressure in a continuously changing environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills required
  • Must be willing to fulfil a role in the unit according to the flexi‑hours system and call system
