Job description
Overview

A vacancy exists for a Registered Nurse (ICU) qualified, based at Life Mount Edgecombe Hospital reporting to the Unit Manager. The successful candidate will provide holistic and high-quality nursing care to critically ill patients in line with Company & Hospital strategic objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Provide quality basic and specialized nursing care
  • Maintain continual communication with the patient and family regarding the patient’s condition
  • Administer medications in accordance with ethical and legal frameworks
  • Review and comply with internal policies and protocols
  • Ensure quality management systems and initiatives are conducted according to unit specifications
  • Advocate for the patient by coordinating acuity with case management and notifying the doctor of any limitations
People Management
  • Interact and communicate with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Provide training and development to support personal and professional growth
  • Ensure the ICU team works within the scope of practice to utilise the correct skills mix
Cost Management
  • Manage all stock used according to unit policies and protocols
  • Control and manage staff hours and leave in accordance with company policy
Infection Control and SHEQ
  • Maintain a safe, holistic patient environment to enforce infection control
  • Promote a safe and healthy working environment by completing SHEQ alerts and incident reports to the SHEQ Coordinator
Stakeholder Relationships
  • Conduct in-service orientation on doctor-specific preferences
  • Execute doctor requests and prescriptions after patient rounds
  • Assist multi-disciplinary team members with the execution of their duties
Equipment & Instrumentation
  • Check equipment and instrumentation daily and report any defaults to the Unit Manager and Clinical Engineer
  • Educate and supervise staff and doctors on the correct utilisation of specialised equipment
Record Keeping
  • Ensure records are accurately completed and stored in accordance with legal and ethical requirements
Requirements
  • Relevant Degree or Diploma in Nursing and registration with SANC
  • Post Basic qualification in Critical Care required
  • Strong customer orientation, team player, energetic and well organized
  • Ability to work under pressure in a continuously changing environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to fulfil a role in the unit according to the flexi-hours system and call system
