Overview

EE position: No. Introduction: Mintek has an exciting career opportunity for a Project Engineer: Mine Closure & Rehabilitation who will also assist in scoping the projects, investigating new sites and preparation of internal cost estimates and detailed designs.

The primary purpose of this role is to implement, monitor and supervise Derelict & Ownerless mines projects on site, prepare monthly project reports, and provide updates on the project programme and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare designs and specifications; conduct site inspections to ensure project quality objectives are attained and operations are conducted according to standard specifications, statutory requirements, and safe practices.
  • Construction supervision: serve as client representative on site; maintain on‑site quality assurance and conformance to designs and specifications; ensure compliance with statutory requirements and Mine Health and Safety Act requirements.
  • Verify measurement and calculation of quantities for payment certificates; address on‑site deviations to scope, designs and specifications; monitor and track all construction activities and ensure contractor compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Witness on‑site quality tests; approve procured material; compile daily diaries and progress reports; attend progress meetings and facilitate technical/coordination meetings.
  • Project coordination: coordinate execution to align outputs with Mintek’s strategies and goals; manage and assess project documents from contractors, including scoping documents, bills of quantity, and budgets.
  • Proactively manage tasks to identify problems early and institute remedial action; interact with stakeholders to understand and manage expectations; compile weekly project progress and financial reports; prepare weekly and monthly project progress and financial reports.
  • Design and documentation: prepare detailed mine rehabilitation designs including construction drawings; compile tender documents with specifications; manage and assess all project documents from contractors; initiate projects with desktop studies and site investigations to produce scoping reports.
  • Conduct pre-feasibility studies and community engagement; manage specialist sub‑consultants (e.g., geotechnical specialists, surveyors).
  • Stakeholder management: interact with key stakeholders and attend meetings with law enforcement and private security providers; manage relations between contractors and mining communities; escalate issues to the client as needed.
  • Security and team management for shaft installations; prepare audit and finding reports for D&O programme; budgeting and estimates for projects; tender and technical evaluation; statistical management of projects and costing.
  • SHEQ management: ensure effective SHEQ procedures, compliance with legislation across sites, undertake risk assessments, and prepare/ review monthly SHEQ reports; prepare SOPs and related documentation; contribute to standardisation of tender documents and MCR processes.
Qualifications and Experience
  • MEng or MSc in Earth Sciences and related fields (or relevant; PhD in related fields ideal).
  • Extensive knowledge of the mining industry or public sector, mining communities.
  • 10 years of project management experience in mine closure and rehabilitation, civil engineering, concrete works, and earthworks.
  • Petencies: Sound knowledge and management of Mine Closure and Rehabilitation programmes; maintenance of Mine Closure & Rehabilitation databases; development of Mine Closure and Rehabilitation strategy and master plans; sound project management and project finance expertise; sound civil engineering design, contract documentation and management.
