Project Engineer – Bulk Material Handling
Location: Cape Town, South Africa
We are looking for a Project Engineer – Bulk Material Handling to spearhead the creation and refinement of technical data, engineering designs, and specifications for bulk material handling infrastructure throughout South Africa's port network. This pivotal role ensures that engineering outputs are delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with applicable standards across all stages of project execution— from initial concept and design through to procurement, construction, and final commissioning.
Responsibilities
- Perform and review calculations to ensure safe function of equipment for refurbishment, upgrade, or retrofit.
- Prepare and review project and product engineering design drawings and documents.
- Complete process and mechanical engineering design calculations.
- Prepare and review engineering specifications and data sheets.
- Develop and review quality plans and equipment Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
- Create and validate functional design specification packages.
- Prepare and review technical installation, operation, and maintenance manuals.
- Draft and assess commissioning and start-up procedures.
- Coordinate with procurement and vendors to ensure technical compliance of purchased equipment.
- Support project scheduling and cost estimation with accurate engineering inputs.
- Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, and constructability assessments.
- Ensure compliance with relevant international and local engineering codes and standards.
- Provide technical support during fabrication, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Collaborate with QA/QC, HSE, and project management teams to ensure integrated project delivery.
- Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate and organized engineering documentation and revision control.
Qualifications & Experience
- Hold a Technical Degree or higher in Engineering.
- Possess 6–8 years of experience in engineering roles, preferably within bulk material handling or industrial infrastructure.
- Proficient in 2 D and 3 D CAD software.
- Familiar with SAP and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) concepts.
- Strong understanding of Engineering Data Management (EDM) systems.
- Knowledgeable in relevant international codes and standards.
- Capable of organizing and planning your own work with limited supervision.
