Job summary

A prominent university in South Africa is seeking an isiXhosa lecturer for a 3-month contract. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching isiXhosa in the Senior Phase and Further Education and Training department while developing curriculum and supervising honours students. Location: Mowbray Campus – Mowbray, Cape Town, WC ZA (Primary)

Job Purpose

The objective is to fill the position of isiXhosa lecturer in the SP&FET Department with a staff member with expertise in this area.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • A relevant Master’s degree in isiXhosa, or Education related isiXhosa.
  • An Honours degree in isiXhosa, or Education related isiXhosa.
  • IsiXhosa as a major subject at undergraduate level.
  • A relevant teaching qualification with isiXhosa as a major (preferable at secondary school level).
  • Two (2) years’ relevant lecturing experience in SP & FET at tertiary level or five (5) years’ relevant teaching experience at school level.
  • Specialised knowledge of methodologies of teaching isiXhosa.
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
  • Teaching isiXhosa in the SP & FET department.
  • Teaching isiXhosa at honours level and supervising honours students.
  • Curriculum development and other learning materials.
  • Supervising students on teaching practice.
  • Research and involvement in research activities (publications supervision).
  • Academic administration, development, and administration.
  • Adequate content and pedagogical content knowledge.
  • Assessment and Quality Assurance.
  • Good work ethics and ability to manage work.
  • Mentoring and support of students (and staff).
  • Networking with schools and other networks.
  • Ability to align yourself to hybrid teaching and learning models (face‑to‑face and online learning).
  • Perform other functions as may be assigned by the Head of Department.
  • Expert subject knowledge.
  • Competence in the methodology of the relevant teaching subjects.
  • Excellent teaching skills.
